There is a limit to the application of democratic methods. You can inquire of all the passengers as to what type of car they like to ride in, but it is impossible to question them as to whether to apply the brakes when the train is at full speed and accident threatens. Leon Trotsky
How does this apply TO representative government in the US.?
should there be any limits on democracy and why?
That's why we elect MPs to act on our behalf. That's why the Brexit referendum was such a disaster. Ordinary people are not qualified to make such a decision.Only a few right wing Tory MPs or Eorosceptics as they called themselves wanted to leave. If it had been a free vote in parliament it would have been a majority to stay.
Bill of Rightsnccs.net
The Bill of Rights is the first 10 Amendments to the Constitution. It spells out Americans' rights in relation to their government. It guarantees civil rights and liberties to the individual—like freedom of speech, press, and religion.Oct 12, 2016
Government is not accurately described in metaphor as a moving vehicle with braking decisions.... for thousands of years mostly rich rapist violent rulers had most the gold jewelry money and feasts while the emergence of middle classes has expanded to a middle majority due to mass transportation distribution markets
the reason why we have representative government is to prevent knee-jerk emotional reactions to every new problem. for example every time there's a mass shooting,
people want to take away guns. when the Democrats demand impeachment all the president they never consider what the next step would be.
for example when there's a duly elected Democratic president and a republican-controlled senate the first move will be toward impeachment.
democracy has its limitations I believe that the founding fathers knew this, for example electoral college, the House of Representatives, and the Supreme Court. I believe that all these institutions were designed as checks against direct democracy.
@m16566 wrong again Congress was intended to be a local democracy and the Senate was appointed by state legislators or governors himself...our true 1st AMENDMENT is 50 thousand persons per Congressional DISTRICT we need 27 more states to ratify all 12 BILL of RIGHTS read it not liar textbooks you believe and the blueREDS redBLUES duopoly IS nothing like the Whigs and Party of Jefferson

You either have no idea how your own government works or you are intentionally trying to sound ignorant.
Congress is made up of the House of Representatives and the Senate.
direct democracy is a form of government we're all of the people vote on every issue.
in the United States we have representative democracy.
that's the way it has always been and hopefully that's the way it will always be.con·gress
@m16566 obviously you have not read all 12 BILL of RIGHTS ....AGAIN CONGRESS is full of greedy criminals taking Cost Of Living ADJUSTMENTS corrupt courts fictionally calling NOT A PAY RAISE violating the 2nd AMENDMENT every even year since 1994 becoming the now 27th AMENDMENT...your post began with a Bolshevik banter and you are spewing bad sophmoric history class lies....Incumbents are gangsters and the Senators worse....The Lafollette family of true Patriots are well known to me....have you ever testified to Congress or an agency hearing ? There is where we can fix the leaks of trillion$ and poisons
