Now, regarding Trump's speech at Normandy.
I give him credit for staying on script during his speech (obviously written by someone else), but if you listen to it you will be struck by two glaring things. 1) His voice was deliberately held low in what I can only call a strained, phony reverence. 2) The speech was obviously read from a prompter and it was emotionless. Not a single sense of feeling anywhere. It was empty, as if it had been delivered by a basic computer TTS. Hell, even the old-time BBC news readers would have been considered exciting in comparison.

Throughout his tenure as president anytime Trump had to deliver a pre-scripted speech and not speak extemporaneously, he is flat, emotionless, and anything but inspiring. Granted that this particular occasion called for a serious presentation, there is a difference between being serious, and being detached, uninterested, and disingenuous.
You can always tell when Trump doesn't believe in something and has been forced to deliver due to responsibility of the office (eg. His denouncement of white supremicists). Combine this with his low reading skills (suggestions from insiders that he might be dyslexic), reading off a prompter might increase his discomfort.
Regardless, everything about Trump is intent. He is a unique animal in that a majority of his indiscretions seem to involve infractions in which "intent" must be demonstrated to indict or convict (a difficult bar to reach). He believes and operates under the aegis of "letter of the law", and not the "spirit of the law". He tends to push his actions into that grey area between "letter of the law" and outright criminality.

I must admit, I was surprised. It was the first time he has ever spoken without including expressions like "great guy" and making continual hand gestures.

You are correct. And while I am NOT a fan of Trump, I give him some credit for going and physically being present -- even if his mind was wandering. Every see Nixon? When he 1st started as President he sweat profusely, but over the subsequent years he got better at speaking.

I am fair. The speech was written by someone else. His delivery of it was monotonous and without a display of feeling anywhere, I think partly because empathy is not one of his strong points and partly because of his ignorance of the events described in the speech. The speech itself, aside from some of the emphasis placed on sovereignty and lack of emphasis on alliances forged and held through time, was a damned good speech. The writer deserves to be recognized for his efforts.
@evidentialist Right, great speech - but you can't give Trump any credit - typical never Trumper.
@gater -- I did give him credit. He managed to stay on script through the whole thing. That's quite an accomplishment for him and he gets a big 'attaboy' for that one. However, on second thought, he did play politics on that hallowed site as well, so maybe a few decibels off his 'attaboy'.
His Nazi speech writer Miller does know how to wax and polish....
@Robecology -- It didn't feel like a Miller speech. I think it was someone else on the staff who penned at least the structural majority of it, but you're right about Miller's ability to wax and polish.
Perhaps Jeff Dunham is hidden behind "his corpulence" operating his mouth by pulling on the neck fat and literally putting words in his mouth?

I was wondering if his handlers have/had him on drugs. The tweets about Bette Middler, comments during the interview with Piers Morgan are him but seemed toned down.
