For those of that age in the USA, what are the benefits/drawbacks to joining AARP? I have avoided them for years, I'm still not sure I want to join, so I thought I'd ask my friends.

The main reason I joined was to get a discount on my auto insurance. Other than that, I haven't found much benefit.

Lots of places offer discounts to AARP members. The organization also provides information on Medigap plans, life insurance, health care, etc.

AARP offers informatiion on insurance but they push their own or sponsor products which are usually not the best available. You are better off shopping for insurance on theopen market or if Medicare age, through a broker. They represent all products and will find theone that isreally the best. They are all standardized so it is just a matter of finding the best cost. For prescription coverage there is a search engine on the Medicare site. Type in all your meds and it will give yo the best cost plan. AARPis good for travel and resraurant discounts if you do not have AAA.

If you travel and stay in hotels a few times a year, you can earn your dues back in a few days.
