"The Human Foot Is a Design Disaster"
I ride bikes because I can't jog anymore. At least I can still walk without pain.
13 years of dashing over concrete hospital hallways with heavy equipment took its toll on me, and along with ankle injuries resulted in a left arthrodesis in 2007 (metatarsal/arch rebuild). That was a success, and the residual osteoarthritis in both feet has made me a living barometer, each year more sensitive to cold humidity. Dietary changes, merino socks and insulated boots are my salvation, requiring a certain vigilance and constant eye on load reduction. I always did prefer hanging from trees!
I kinda like my foot like it is. Yes you can design a springy prosthetic that may be a bit faster but my foot does a pretty good job of standing, balancing, swimming and running. It's a well rounded unit.
