Questions. If I entered this site and were an interplanetary guest knowing nothing about religion/atheism/agnosticism, I would presume that ‘religion’ was a phenomenon hailing from a small part of a landmass the natives call North America.

Who out there thinks that the only religion that exists is Christianity? Does anyone want to say why they think Buddhism is a bad thing? Would you really want to take The Dreamtime away from Australian Aboriginal people or do you not know enough about it to qualify as an adjudicator.

Nonsense. I have said this many times and not ashamed to be an "equal opportunity" offender. I despise most religions, especially the "evangelistic" ones. However, in the US at this time it can be risky to appear socially or politically incorrect! Fuck them if they can't handle the truth!

Answer to question 1: although I speak only for myself, only idiots or morons who don't read would think that. Answer to question 2: I don't think of Buddhism at all, despite the fact that my wife is a buddhist, it is more a philosophy than a religion because the buddah or Sidharta Gautama was a real person, not a made up god that only exists in the books that were written after the facts. Is the Australia thing a question? Because it came out of nowhere and I just don't get it?

I'm fairly certain that they would think we worship sex, given the amount of porn on the web.

They would probably be right. Given the amount of porn on the web, LOL.

These Really, really privative Aboriginal peoples, (I am making fun of my fellow Merikans) actually know exacly what they are doing, how the substances they consume will affect them etc. They do not worship magical gods that do not exist, or try to harm or convert others to their delusion. The Christians did almost succeed in completely destroying their culture.

All religions are merely practiced mythology, and all will fade as have those before them. The sooner the better, in most cases, especially in regard to the unfortunately prevalent Abrahamic nonsense, which as you've noted, is quite popular in the Americas and also the Middle East.

@kodimerlyn "Will they though?"

On a long enough timeline, hopefully before the sun envelopes the Earth, sure! The religiously unaffiliated is the fastest growing demographic group in the U.S. and in many European countries. I've read that this is in no small part due to the internet and unfettered access to information from outside homogenous religious bubbles.

Islam is spreading quickly and does cause me some alarm but, still, I hope that we are witnessing the beginning of the end for organized religion, although it will likely take centuries or more for it to eventually die and its death throes will undoubtedly be quite loud and likely quite violent.

I could give a rat's pitooie WHAT someone else thinks, and I certainly wouldn't want to "take it away from them. Stupid question.
On the other, I WOULD like to know the "truth" myself, whatever the heck it is!

why in the world would you get christianity as hailing from north america? it didn't originate there and it didn't first flourish there. it was in full bloom all over europe and south america by the time it got to north america. as for judging other religions, why do you think anyone here thinks christianity is the only religion? that's a pretty strange assumption. i'm jewish (and an atheist), myself. who here has said anything bad about dreamtime or buddhism or the druids or even zeus? (okay i have mentioned zeus from time to time.) your question makes assumptions based on facts not in evidence.

What an interesting question!

I think all religions were created as tools for social control. Therefore all religions are dangerous.

There are violent fanatics in each religion, and those people are dangerous to others. By and large though most people aren't that extreme.

I don't think that all religious people are bad. I think they are misguided and maybe like to avoid thinking too deeply about things. Not the worst thing in the world, but I don't want to live that way.

Also, the us vs. them dynamic feels petty and unnecessary.

I don't have anything about the philosophical aspects of religion per se.

I do disrespect when they try to add supernatural stuff. And I really, really, hate it when they impose their views on others (read us).

I see little difference between Jesus dogma and pretty much any other supernatural belief except where I live I see a lot more of Christianity than the others.

Good point. I tried to talk to a Christian once about all the creation myths in the world besides the Jewish one, which was probably taken from the Babylonians anyway, and they just looked at me totally bemused.

Most Religions are based on a flawed understanding of the Truth.
