And was there a hookah-smoking caterpillar nearby?
The red one looks very similar to the fly agaric (amanita muscaria). These are fairly common in Northern Europe. I don't know if the same variety is found in australia. What is commonly called 'magic mushrooms' in Britain are the psychedelic psilocybin types. They are a totally different looking looking fungi.. Fly agaric does have some hallucogenic effects and was consumed by vikings. It was said to change them into 'berserkers' where they would become berserk during battle. The hallucogen was quite potent. So potent that it was present at a sufficient level in urine to recycle the dose. It makes you think of those norse vikings in a totally different way! Fly agaric gets its name by its ability to stupify flies that land on it.
It's probably best just to admire looking at them rather than sampling them.
There is a story that the Vikings gave them to reindeer to eat then collected the deer's urine to drink.. This had the effect of removing some of the toxins in the mushroom but left the hallucigens. Hence the expression "being pissed". In the European meaning of the expression to be drunk not the American meaning "being annoyed".
I believe the first one is an Amanita muscaria or magic mushroom.
There are several "magic mushroom" or psilocybe species growing in the UK. They are small and brown with a pointed top. I would not recommend eating Amanita spp as they are very toxic.
