Accused christchurch mosque shooter pleads not guilty to killing 51 people and trying to murder another 40 as survivors gasp and cry in new zealand court
why waste all this time on a bullshit trial for an absolutely, guilty madman, who simply deserves to be wiped off the face of this earth ! This pointless exercise will cost millions for " no reason at all" which could be used for more deserving purposes.
Because, asshole, trial by jury is a basic human right.
Thank you MattChanni for your charming comment that I am an "asshole," I really do appreciate
the color of your warmth and friendship..
@madmac Any man who would deny ANYBODY the right to a trial, and call due process bullshit is an asshole.
And you ain't my friend, palooka.
Don't be a schmuck and then take offense when people call you one. There's a causal relationship here. A schmuck is a schmuck.
IT is not pointless. It is the due legal process in a civilised country. Whether he pled guilty of innocent there would still be a trial before a jury. The evidence is such that he is bound to be found guilty.
I doubt it will cost "millions". The cost will be well into the thousands, but this is the nature of such things.
It is not a "pointless exercise". This proceeding reaffirms the rule of law in civilized society. It is, first of all, necessary to establish beyond doubt the guilt of this individual and do all we can to nullify those who would try to portray him as some kind of "hero" in their warped ideologies. We must establish the sequence of events, painful as that will be. The forensic evidence must be seen.
Finally, what would you suggest be done with this "absolutely guilty madman"? You say he deserves to be wiped off the face of the earth. I do not disagree. But to execute him ABSOLUTELY REQUIRES the process of trial by jury and a finding of fact. If not execution, then life imprisonment; which likewise requires a trial by jury, in our civilized societies. Without a trial, to simply lock someone away for life or dispose of them makes us barbarians. It puts us on the level of this murderer.
And while we may derive a visceral satisfaction from such revenge, it is fleeting at best. It doesn't last. It sickens us individually and it sickens our society. Those it does not sicken aren't fit to live in civilized society.
No death penalty in NZ
@Amisja Understood already; my response was to the OP desire to see him "wiped off the earth", which seems to be a call for death.
In general I oppose the death penalty as well, but in this case I would make an exception. This character would become a celebrity in prison. At least dead he won't be giving interviews.
The voice of reason, and in retrospect I must agree Paul.
@madmac And still, you ask @Moravian "why bother to hold a trial?" Again, it is a ritual of civilized society. As atheists and agnostics, we don't need religion, but we are still creatures of ritual like all human beings.
A trial affirms our shared social response to such acts of violence and takes said response out of the realm of mere vigilante justice. While vigilantes make great cinema, it's lousy social policy.
