More unwritten history? Or just ignorance? [apnews.com]
Did you know where the "Uncle Remus" stories originated? In Africa! "Uncle Remus" was a slave (possibly connected to the Gullah people) who apparently took a liking to a young man named Joel Chandler Harris. Remus told him stories about "Brer Rabbit", "Brer Fox" and others. "Brer" ("Brother" ) showed children the clever habits and natures of the animals Africans had observed for centuries. I know they're no longer considered ''politically correct'' (and that's a shame) but the gentle wisdom and morality of these stories shouldn't be lost.
