Well I think I just got a dog. A beautiful red tick hound greeted me when I pulled in at the house, returning from the store. She seemed famished and poorly taken care of if at all. No collar, overgrown nails, ribs showing (although I’ve been told this breed is naturally pretty lean especially if kept as a hunting dog). And she’s got fairly chewed up nipples suggesting she just had a litter of pups not too long ago and had been nursing for some time. I hope they’re weaned. The neighbor thinks someone dropped her off in the neighborhood. Some piece of shit probably had her tied up breeding her with minimal care and either ditched her when she outlived her usefulness or she got loose and ran. Hound dogs can cover a lot of ground, who knows.

I found her some food and got her some water, made a makeshift leash from a car luggage strap and walked her up my street to see if I noticed anyone looking for her, or if they would notice me. Later I gave her a bath and mom brought over some proper food. I’ve made a rope line across my yard that she can be attached to and roam a bit, and I’m washing some blankets to put in the old doghouse we still had out back. She’s a sweetheart and loves cuddles.

I dunno how I’m going to afford this, having been recently laid off, but I’ve had at least one friend offer to sponsor her and send me some pet supplies so that helps. She’s asleep on the couch now. Unfortunately I don’t think I left the soap in long enough to get rid of her fleas in that first bath so after we both rest up I’m going to have to try again. I hope she forgives me 🤞

That's such a cute dog and you're a good person for helping her out and caring for her... I sure do hope you can keep her... You should go online and search for any type of assistance that might be available... Maybe sent an email to the Rachael Ray show! She owns a dog food company... You might get a nice donation...

Atta boy! You two will be just fine! Keep her isolated until you have the flea problem under control. Your local ASPCA might offer cheaper vet services. I'd be willing to bet he has never had been wormed and might have worms. You should have her tested and do the required vaccinations. Also ask around for meds and food like on craigslist, etc.....

I think that last photo says it all - feeling secure, relaxed happy and contented. You keep that dog with you in the house and give her some love and affection - you will be repaid a hundred times over.
Any problems message me and I will help if I can.... I run a kennels in England, have about 40 dogs here today.

Thanks what breeds are you keeping mostly now? On the flea issue, my mom told me to give her a bath in dawn dish soap for 5 minutes so I rushed off to do that, got her dry and found out she meant to say 15 😫 I gave her a second bath last night, after which she seemed to stop twitching from bites but she still digs and gnaws on herself a good bit; I’m hoping she’s just tending to previous bites but I’ll have to get her some flea meds later. A local farm supply store will give rabies shots for 10 dollars on certain days so I’ll try that, and I’ve got a cousin that’s a vet that may give me a break if she needs worming. I still haven’t seen her make a bowel movement, she seemed to try a couple times this morning on our walk but wound up just peeing.

I’m not sure if you’re in the habit of takin in adult strays but if you’ve had any experience, how do you go about renaming them? Try a bunch of names and search for one they’ll respond to? Or do you just have to pick one, stick with it and retrain em to respond?

@Wurlitzer Pick a name and stick with it - use it a lot and reinforce the name with food and treats. Try various commands, sit, stay, leave etc and see what is already known .. set your own commands and rules regulations of behaviour and stick with them.
Medication is far better for fleas and worms - my experience is that vet stuff is effective, but pet shop stuff is often not effective..
Vaccinations are life savers - most of the diseases you vaccinate for would cause death or serious debility i
I look after dogs from dachshunds to irish wolfhounds and cats, I do not routinely get involved in rehoming dogs, but have taken on a few over the years

@ShadowAmicus thanks I found the owner today and determined there’s no real abuse going on, other than the lady kind of being a flake who hasn’t showed up yet lol. Should have her home tomorrow, and I might get one of her puppies out of it. They’re half pitbull, with her markings. I’ll make a post about it soon.

@Wurlitzer pleased it all worked out - look forward t seeing the puppy

She is a beautiful girl and probably used as a breeder, she maybe pining her pups. People are so cruel. Stray animals is not really an issue in UK and certainly not stray dogs, however this ofren means breeders are rife. The breeding bitches have horrible lives and yes as you say, are disposed of once they are no longer useful. As for cost. Keeping a dog does not need to cost a lot. If you can get hold of sheep's brains or fish heads, put through a food processor...they love it. The fish heads are extremely useful for shiny coats. My first hubby's Mum used to get tons of fishmonger off cuts and fish heads for racing greyhounds. These creatures needed to be in tip top physical condition and wow they loved the food. My mum fed our dog sheep's brains. My only issue was they stunk when cooking. Commercial dog food often has a lot of grains in them. Good luck. She is going to need a lot of love. A job will come up btw

RESCUE: My breed of choice.
That is wonderful news for both of you. I don't know if you have any at your house but Sevin dust, for plants, is a perfect thing to sprinkle on animals for fleas and ticks. Sprinkle a little into her bedding too. You can use it on carpet and furniture too if it's needed. My vet told me this years ago.

Yeah I think I’ve heard that. I heard it’s also good to sprinkle in water to kill mosquitoes/eggs or prevent them too but I’m always suspicious of most chemicals around pets. Slightly comforting that it’s vet recommended but I’d feel better if a vet said it very recently for some reason haha. In this case I don’t think it had spread to the furniture or house yet so I gave her a bath with dawn dish soap n let the soapy water’s high surface tension drown them (I think/hope 🤞) seems to have worked so far. Mom had told me to leave it in for 5 minutes for the first bath and when I got doggo rinsed n dry I looked n saw she had texted a correction: 15 so had to give her another one lol. Cue the cursing

@Wurlitzer , it's the lesser of evils. It's like 98% diatomaceous earth which is not a chemical.

I live on the reservation and we have a stray dog problem. We also have people drop off dogs on the neighborhood all the time. Especially in the Spring after Christmss puppies have grown out their puppy cuteness. I have coerced many dumped strays in and taken to the animal shelter over the last few years. I, mysrlf hsve fouf rescue dogs.

Beautiful dog. Thanks for taking her in, no animal deserves to be dumped.

She’s a good looking dog!
I hope she can stay with you - I wish one would adopt me🙂
