The article clearly states different reasons individuals voted for him. Some were pragmatic, economic and some were due to more of a tribal nature while others did for less gracious reasons. 65 million individuals voted for Clinton, also for varying reasons. To address your "pot" question, those who voted for Trump are in one "pot" while those who voted for Clinton are in another. Johnson and Stein have their own "cups" as they couldn't fill a pot.
