Photo: 6-29-19 juvenile female coyote waiting patiently for me to decide to start walking, desert ravine below our housing division, Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA.
Because the pup has a low pack status, she kept lying down in submission whenever I stopped to photograph something. When I took a few steps, she would jump up and move also, then lie down again.
I used to train my dogs in Kentucky to do the same thing when I was out birding, but the coyote was doing it on her own.since older coyote pups shoulder bump younger siblings to the ground to show dominance.
The coyote met me in the desert this morning as well, and immediately lay down.
Wow! What a fun encounter. What an intelligent face!!
She has a very beautiful face, appearing in her prime of health.
I’m curious why she was following you.
She was minding her own business, hunting ground squirrels in the sagebrush, and I crossed her path while on my own daily hike through her territory. Once our eyes met she began politely lying down and reacting to me, but soon I turned my back and continued my own hike and she went over the wall to continue hunting food inside the housing division.
She/he is looking for a mother perhaps?
The pups are hunting on their own now and have resembled adults since Jan., although they are probably only about 10 months old. I sometimes see the entire pack together in the evening. I think this female might be the Omega since she's so submissive.
