The most scary thing about Ocasio-Cortez is she is the tip of the iceberg. Universities are turning out lefty idiots like her by the millions.
Right, because it's so much better to let people to remain ignorant and ultimately find a sky wizard to provide all the answers. I'm sure your economic degree from Brown counters hers.
@dokala I have B.S, M.S, and PhD. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois, which at the time was the #4 ranked program in the world. There is no way a half-wit like AOC would even have been admitted into the undergraduate program I entered in 1984. Half of those admitted can't make it to the upper level electrical engineering programs, and those that fail out usually transfer into something like Economics and find they can breeze through the Economics program with very little effort. I have taught classes in microelectronic circuits to engineering students at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and I was admitted to Harvard Business School in 1996. So I believe my academic background stacks up quite well with that of the cute little half-wit AOC.
The major problem going on at universities in the USA is millions of little half-wits like AOC get admitted, and they are brainwashed by leftist professors. The graduate deeply in debt full of all kinds of radical ideas that don't work in the real world. Our federal government is literally spending trillions of dollars producing millions of people like AOC with no marketable skills, crushing debt, and a belief that some form of socialism or collectivism will solve all of our problems.
@BD66 with all those degrees one would hope you'd know more about the world, but electrical engineering doesn't translate well outside of hard sciences. Kind of like Ben Carson being clueless about everything outside of neurosurgery.
Essentially you said your generation had it harder for education eligibility, but that's an overly biased opinion. Can you back that up with data? This generation already has it harder with costs, which you didn't have to deal with (you had to cover a pittance). Also, the bubba network helped more people in the 80s than they do now (outside of 1%ers). Competition is much more fierce these days than then, especially with foreign students taking up slots. Acceptance rates were higher during your time, but you're special somehow. He'll, I had it harder than you in the 90s. Of course, as a self righteous Boomer, you'll never believe that. [businessinsider.com]
GenX and millennials are more productive than your generation because of technology and the ubiquitous adoption and use of it, but you'll rant you are different or better somehow and apply Olympic level mental gymnastics to arrive at that spectacularly misguided conclusion. Your comment about colleges being liberal centers of excellence is not new and was said of your generation. Did you not get laid enough in college? Nevermind, I don't want to know.
There you go highlighting socialism without an ounce of understanding it or any other ism we have around the world. You just know it's bad because that was hammered into your head since a small boy. Congrats on being unable to beat the indoctrination. Well, you're on this site, so at least you aren't worshipping a sky wizard. I suppose it's too much to ask that you overcome a lifetime of other spoon feed garbage.
Anyhow, I appreciate you telling us how smart you are and denigrading younger generation(s), which reveals more about you than any academic accomplishments.

>> I worked as a electrical engineer for 14 years, then I quit, formed and investment management company and launched a hedge fund, so I'm doing fine.
Essentially you said your generation had it harder for education eligibility, but that's an overly biased opinion.
>> I made no such statement. I stated that the course of education I chose to pursue was extremely difficult, and that AOC would have almost zero chance to be admitted, and even less chance of making it through that course of study. The average SAT score for students admitted into the program today is about 1500.
Can you back that up with data? This generation already has it harder with costs, which you didn't have to deal with (you had to cover a pittance).
>> You are correct, and what's worse is that for the high tuition that students are paying, many are just receiving leftist brainwashing, and they are learning very few marketable skills.
Also, the bubba network helped more people in the 80s than they do now (outside of 1%ers). Competition is much more fierce these days than then, especially with foreign students taking up slots.
>> You are correct with respect to undergraduate programs, but even in the late 1980, the foreign competition was intense for graduate admission and graduate studies. There is something called the PhD qualifying exam you have to pass in order to enter the PhD program. I was one of 36 students that took the exam. The results were:
First: The #1 student from the top technical university in Turkey
Second: Me
Third: The #1 student from National Taiwan University, who later went on to be the architect of Microsoft's Bing search engine.
So I'm very familiar with foreign competition.

I'm no boomer, I'm part of GenX. The baby boom ended in 64, I was born in 66.

Colleges and universities have always been slanted to the left, but the problem has gotten much worse, so if you couple stronger leftist indoctrination to higher costs, you get millions like AOC who graduate brainwashed and deep in debt.
Did you not get laid enough in college? Nevermind, I don't want to know.
Here's the woman I met in college:
I did just fine.

>> Here is the definition of socialism:
Definition of socialism
1 : any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods
2a : a system of society or group living in which there is no private property
b : a system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state
3 : a stage of society in Marxist theory transitional between capitalism and communism and distinguished by unequal distribution of goods and pay according to work done
>> I've been to 49 states and 17 countries. I've met people from all over the world who have fled countries that adopted this definition of socialism. Most of those people came to the USA to work in the tech industry. They just shake their heads in amazement that people in the USA would want to inflict that misery upon themselves.
Anyhow, I appreciate you telling us how smart you are and denigrading younger generation(s), which reveals more about you than any academic accomplishments.
@BD66 lots of what ifs there. Hedge fund manat? You're bragging about that? I'm sure you're doing fine, but that hasn't widened the aperture for you to understand our complicated world. If anything, you've tainted your view because it's a profit driven view. I don't expect you to understand why that's bad with numerous intended and unintended consequences from your activity.
So you're an older GenXer with heavy Boomer influence. You have more in common with them than you are able to relate to the rest of us.
I don't have Facebook, so no dice.
17 countries? You like to measure, don't you? I'll leave that be because it's not as high as you're bragging. Also, your socialism comment is contradictory. Socialism isn't what people want, but guys like you call it that to demonize anything different. There's good money in prolonging the problem that you thrive in and perpetuate. By the way, we'd rather have this:
Socialism isn't what people want, but guys like you call it that to demonize anything different.
>> Socialism is exactly what most Democrats want (77% in the latest poll):
There's good money in prolonging the problem that you thrive in and perpetuate. By the way, we'd rather have this:
>> If you are referring to Denmark, Denmark is a capitalist country with a generous safety net. If it were a Socialist country, the government of Denmark would own all the corporations, and it would be impossible for me to invest in Denmark. The Scandinavian countries are always held up as a gleaming example of Socialism, but they are not Socialist countries:
Here is the Denmark ETF: EDEN
Here is the Swedish ETF: EWD
Here is the Norway ETF: NORW
Here is the Finland ETF: EFNL
If the Scandinavian countries were Socialist, it would be impossible for me to invest there. The other thing that is often ignored is that those are homogeneous societies, and the Scandinavians in Scandinavia don't do as well as the Scandinavians in the USA. When the Scandinavians in the USA do better than other demographic groups in the USA, the lefties attribute it to "racism" or "white privilege" When the Scandinavians in Scandinavia do better than people living in other parts of the world, the lefties attribute that to the "success of Socialism" when they aren't even Socialist countries.
I certainly think we could learn something from those countries. It would be great if we could stop spending $600,000,000 per year on our military. If we did that, there would be plenty more money to subsidize health care and education.
Roflmao!! What a mess - I was brushing my teeth when i clicked on this! So much for multi-tasking. LOL
