Term Limits - is it time to start term limits for Congress?

We have too many career politicians, over 80% of Americans want term limits for Congress, but when Congress voted on it, 78% of them were against it. Incumbents are re-elected at a 98% rate, largely because of name recognition.

Absolutely. The longer politicians are able to stay in power, the more corrupt they become. They all end up being bought and paid for.

I must be confused - I thought Congress were supposed to represent the people who elected them.

I think they should be judged by their constituents, in the same way college professors are anonymously rated by their students...

so do you think Tulsi are AOC will fall prey to being bought off over time too? because i think these two women are OUR future.

What would be the incentive for for politicians to do a good job if they know their jobs are not going to be renewed the next term? If after 2-6 years, people need to express their dissatisfaction by voting them out...apparently, people have been happy with the turtle, Mitch M, for all those years...placing term limits is not going to change that.

It would be better if we set a retirement age for our politicians to bring in fresh ideas . We have a lower limit, we need an upper limit. Many of us are forced to retire when we are at our peak of knowledge, experience and income. They should be forced as well.

You can't be serious, Its an honor and privilege to serve in Congress - everyone should do the best job they can every day they are there, regardless of when it might end.

@gater Of course they should...but if you follow your reps and senators and see how they vote on certain things and what acts and proposals they support, they might not be what most of the people want...so next time around, you vote them out if you can...not all of them have the skills or experience and some leave on their own...it is not just an honor and privilege, it is a duty...you are kidding if you think I am going to believe that you would vote for a person of the opposite party even if they were doing a great job...

The flip side to this issue is that if politicians only have ~12 years to enrich themselves that the government trough, they may be even more greedy and willing to sell out the US citizens in order to make the money quickly while they can before they become lobbyists.
