I know as late as the 80's Germans paid taxes to support the church. A German acquaintance told me it was a small amount and people mostly just paid it because if not there were charges for marriage and death- I guess within the church. Any Germans know?

This has never changed … With the "reunification" the churches had a boon … In the 1950s the GDR (East) had abolished church taxes. Churches rake in about 11 billion Euros annually from the taxes and other government subsidies.
