Hey church … we have been separated for a century, but you are still costing me money. I had enough!
The state owned railway company, Deutsche Bahn AG, refused to display these posters in railway stations, claiming that the posters lacked neutrality. Yet, the same company did not hesitate to sponsor of a major nternational church event.
I know as late as the 80's Germans paid taxes to support the church. A German acquaintance told me it was a small amount and people mostly just paid it because if not there were charges for marriage and death- I guess within the church. Any Germans know?
This has never changed … With the "reunification" the churches had a boon … In the 1950s the GDR (East) had abolished church taxes. Churches rake in about 11 billion Euros annually from the taxes and other government subsidies.
