Fortuitous accident
This morning I set off for a day in York - about 45 minutes drive and a pleasant place to chill. But a traffic queue appeared on route so I quickly decided to transfer the day to Hull, closer than York, straight down the motorway, old port and fishing city that I have avoided visiting for my 17 years here - and what a mistake that has been.
Ferens art gallery has some amazing stuff - pictures, sound screens, interactive art - 2 hours and barely seen a quarter of the place. I was awestruck by 'The lions at home' a huge canvas with fine brushwork and a subject close to my heart
On to Wilberforce House - a look at the man who ended the UK slave trade - very sobering stuff.Never cease to be amazed by mans inhumanity.
and next door The street life museum - a collection of carriages, trams, bicycles, toys, cars, mostly set up as street scenes, with voice recordings of people going about daily life at that period - fascinating.and such a well put together museum
Lots of other stuff to see around the city and a few more visits to be planned

Wow...magnificent!
The path not taken took you on quite a journey...now you have new things to explore...how wonderful!
oneof my favourite poems
@ShadowAmicus lol you recognized it even though I changed it up a bit...excellent literary memory you have...
@thinktwice goes way back to Simon and Garfunkle - Emily Dickinson and Robert Frost. What is/are your faourite poem(s)
@ShadowAmicus It is not common to find men who remember classic poetry...I like most poetry...Longfellow, Lord Tennyson, Bryon,Whitman, even some Kipling...on the darker side, Poe...modern poetess, Maya Angelou...
Sometimes when we get off the usual path we discover all kinds of treasures. Beautiful painting of the lions. Thanks for sharing.
That is gorgeous.
I asked them to do a high resolution photo that could be printed full size - about 12 foot wide - would make a fantastic wallpaper piece
Never been to Hull but it was the city of culture a few years back so it must have something.
Like you - never been before, even during the city of culture year and it is only 45 miles down the motorway - my loss.. Lots of impressive old buildings, old cobbled alleys through converted warehouses ... have collected a sheaf of brochures for planning future visits. Hull is well worth a weekend stay.
That sounds amazing. I went all over the UK when I lived there and never went to Hull! Its amazing how you take your homeland for granted. What an oversight.
