Using fiction to prove ones perspective is a flawed paradigm.
Trying to prove the superstitions you were raised with by quoting scripture is as pointless as trying to prove the existence of elves and dwarves by referencing passages from lord of the rings. I have no doubt at all in the sincerity of people's faith, I have no doubt when they claim to be a true believer, just as I have no doubt that the Vikings were true believers in Oden. However YOUR faith is only a reflection of YOUR personal beliefs, it does not constitute the nature of reality. Many is the child who believes in the Tooth Fairy, that belief does not make the Tooth Fairy any more real, except in the imagination of the child who believes. The same holds true for a belief in a god or gods or a given religion. In the end, the universe doesn't care about anyone's beliefs, the universe (as far as we know) is not a conscious entity, nor is it controlled by anyone or anything beyond the physical laws of nature, such as govern physics, chemistry and biology.
I think primarily the bible succeeded for being entirely based on analogous reasoning. It is essentially a form of analogical rhetoric that was a revolution for communication in the time period it was relevant. (Roman empire to middle ages) Currently, I don't think very many religious ""believers"" even have a clue what religion meant in earlier days. Its essentially just some guy's opinion saying its the ancient way of doing things. Obviously can work on people who never learned much about it.
