Fairly hard science fiction (spaceships maneuver realistically, not like airplanes in space), real human (and alien) stories, and the first epic story that was planned out in advance for the entire series and actually carried out over 4 seasons. (Season 5 was sort of tacked on, the creator didn't think they would get another year...)
