Thou shalt not take the Lord's name in vain: Italian town to issue €400 blasphemy fines
I agree with trying to stop loutish and nuisance behaviour, such as dog fouling and allowing them to run loose around the town, and also loud noise during the hours of darkness and general incivility such as shouting and brawling...but these measures go way too far in infringing human rights. There should be no special treatment given to any religion, and as blasphemy is no longer a criminal offence....someone needs to challenge these local laws in a higher court...and they probably will!
I wonder if Italian national law has a freedom of speech law that can over ride the town's blasphemy law.
It would be interesting if someone put that to the test.
There are freedom of speech laws but there is also a prohibition of "public immorality."
This law can fall under that category.
