CREDIT CARDS - just sharing a tip I picked up long ago from a lady who works on bank fraud.
Have one credit card that you use only for internet transactions - set a credit limit at what you need with a maximum you can afford to lose....limits your potential losses if (when) the card is used fraudulently.
good advice. have been following it for many years.
But in the US you’re only liable for like $50 of stolen charges. That’s also why, if they try to sell you fraud insurance you definitely don’t want to pay for that.
In England you have to show it was fraud to get the money back .... it is not always easy to show that a telephone transaction was done by someone else
Are your laws different than ours? We are not liable as consumers for any fraudulent use of credit cards...
here in the uk you have to show it is fraud
Example - years ago I bought petrol near Oxford and continued to London .. the following day my credit card details were used on a hand written slip to buy furniture (£3500) in Oxford. I could prove I was in London at the time of the transaction but took 2 years to get cash back
@ShadowAmicus Are you speaking of a cash card/debit card? I left my card at Macy's and it was used to charge over $2000 of goods...my limit at the time was only $1500, but, since my credit was good, the person was given an instant upgrade! Lucky me...since credit cards are paid over time and not taken out instantly like a debit card, I simply did not pay and the amounts were reversed out. I merely had to provide a sample of my signature for them to compare...I never sign the back of the card...anyone can copy your signature then.
@NoPlanetB Yes...I have done that, but you are correct...many never check...and of course, online, there is no checking...my home owners insurance pays for fraud as well...criminals need to get a life...
@thinktwice it was a credit card - they copied the details, had a friend in the shop who put details into their machine and they shared the profits .... i only got money back after police prosecution and haggling
@ShadowAmicus how horrible!
