Are there still those out there that don't want a ban on assault weapons? What could possibly be a reason someone needs a military type assault weapon?
There may be some people who see a valid reason, and for sure, violence in America is a complicated phenomenon. But incidents of violence are made far more lethal by the easy availability and efficient killing power of military grade firearms. The truth is we have allowed a system where anyone can get access to the types of guns that make killing large numbers of people VERY EASY. I don't think anyone wants that anymore.
I'm pretty sure people's opinions on banning these weapons is directly related to IQ.
The lower it is, the greater the need and love for guns.
When people don't have the ability to communicate, they turn to violence to do the talking for them.
Not sure there is a correlation there. I know some really smart people who own guns. I own a couple of guns myself, no assault weapons though. I've thought about it due to the presence of right wing militia in the North West. I wonder if trump will wind up his right wing supporters should he loose the election. I guess in some twisted way that supports their personal defense argument. Only I'm worried about protecting from them.
Some guns are fine. People hunt and I understand rifles are needed.
There is a correlation between the denial, lack of logic, or lack or intelligence related to guns and gun violence in the US. Where else does this problem exist to this extent?
That's what this is about. We're talking about assault weapons.
@Athena A couple of my friends one an ex science teacher and another a wealthy investor own AR15s. They both have stated that type of gun should be made illegal for general gun sales.
Here's a charming but fast-moving, fact-filled debate - with herself...

To fight socialists if they take over!
There are always a few loony-bin reactionaries.
@zesty No, I will not, as long as you make such absurd and false statements. You claim to be a college professor. In what field? I have to ask, because your knowledge of politics, political ideology, history and government is abysmal. I get angry at the irrational right wing nuts.
I stood against Communism in West Berlin at the time of the Berlin Crisis and was more than willing to act for my country under overwhelming odds. Because I wanted to understand what attracted anyone to communism, I studied Marxism, communism, the writings of Marx, Engels, Lenin, and Mao among others. And, it became abundantly clear that communism is a totalitarian total system ideology that was evil and unworkable. But,. through study at the graduate level, and from first hand experience in Germany, I came to see the huge difference between Marxism and social democracy, unlike you.
I am a veteran, a gun owner and an was an expert marksman, but Having fired assault weapons and machine guns, I know that the only real purpose of automatic weapons and semi-automatic weapons with large, replaceable clips is killing people. Your irrational positions at the extreme right makes it appear that you are an Ayn Rand extreme libertarian. Rand believed that greed is good, that she had the right to do anything she wanted to and others be damned, and that all government is bad. I know because I read all of her works. I find your positions irrational, selfish, destructive, and disgusting. I will fight such positions at every opportunity. It is my right and my patriotic duty to do so.
@zesty You are rabidly irrational and aggressive. You are the one who fails to my questions about what basis you use to ground such absurd and aggressive demagoguery. People like always dodge real questions and try to use distractive tactics. I will be following you to refute your crap. I will never let such behavior go unnoticed.
@zesty You stated in your bio that you enjoy intellectual discussions. Oh, really, I wouldn't say so. I asked you to provide me with the learning, knowledge and reasoning basis for the crap you are espousing. So,far, you have refused by avoiding the question. I provided me with my learning and experience background for my assertions. Why are you unwilling to do the same?
With you last words, you are trying to label me as a communist. That is a damnable, despicable lie which shows how vicious you can get when challenged. And you like intellectual discussions? There is ample reason to doubt that.
@zesty As usual, you are insulting and uncivil. Why are you afraid to reveal your purported area of expertise? For your information, I have an IQ of 145 , had a successful professional career, and published numerous articles and sets of skill-training materials. I also created programs which received state and national recognition. So, I am not intelligent, huh? I find it remarkable that a professor can be so uncivil, biased, and politically naïve.
@zesty No. Your are simply lying. I have just simply made my case throughout. You have been consistently , aggressive, derogatory, and hostile. You have consistently and deliberately avoided providing any informational, factual, or reasoning support for any assertion you have made., but have consistently tried to play unethical and irrational games. Your behavior is nothing short of despicable.
It is obvious that anyone who disagrees with you on political issues will never be able to engage you in productive dialogue. I am glad that you do not characterize most women.
@zesty Anyone looking at our exchanges will know that I was just either providing the experiential and knowledge basis for my position, or providing the information that refuted your vicious and false attacks and insults. Who in the hell do you think you are fooling, besides yourself? You must assume that anyone disagreeing with you is either stupid, or that you can intimidate him or her and make them go away. Ain't going to work with me! No way, no how! Keep up your crap, and you are going to get a valid comeback EVERY timer.
@zesty Again, your conduct is uncivil, offensive, and derogatory. Your turn things around and accuse me of the very things you are doing. You insult and attempt to vilify. Your behavior is nothing short of despicable. Through it, you show just what kind of a person you are. I feel sorry for you. But, I still will not let you get away with it. Every time I see you do it, I will rebuke such conduct and label it for what it is. .
You're too late to fight socialism.
@Robecology These are social services, not socialism.
dick compensation - what other explanation is there
Mitch McConnell has repeatedly blocked all gun legislation.
Let us hope the NRA implodes. It looks to be in danger of doing exactly that. Wayne Lapierre(however he spells it) might finally have caused the nra to lose its tax exempt status. You know, the nra hasn't spoken for honest gun owners since ol'Wayne took the helm in the late 1970s. They are a pure lobby machine for the gun manufacturers. It is all about justifying and spurring unfettered, unhinged, gun sales. ...and for Wayne, personal greed.
I hear you. The answer is there is no legitimate excuse...er, reason to have an assault rifle. But that mere question and answer is sure to be attacked as partisan politics. Meanwhile, every time a mass shooting happens, there is a spike in gun sales. Guess who is buying them. Largely NOT first-time gun owners. Rather, it is the same roughly 30% who are already armed to the teeth. It is culturally pathological! Well, when calling out the insanity of high-powered weaponry militia-minded every-man-for-himself free-for-all arms race qualifies as partisan, so be it. We will just have to be partisan, then. Silence is complicity.
I'm waiting to see how long it takes one of the gun rights people on this site to give you a lecture because "those guns are not assault weapons" and also "they aren't automatic weapons" So therefore there should not be a ban. There are a lot of people out there who do not want a ban on anything. Personally I do not understand their reasoning.
No lecture from me. You're already well informed.
@bigpawbullets unfortunately I never wanted to know this much about weaponry but that is the society we live in and it is important to keep as informed as possible just so you can clarify (note I don't say argue) your point on why you take the stand you take. I do believe that every issue has at least 3 sides. Knee jerk nastiness doesn't make anything better and only drives all of us further apart.
@AmelieMatisse
Stop in for coffee sometime. Linda & I would welcome you.
@bigpawbullets thank you. I appreciate it.
Yo are playing stupid word games and you know it. Any semi-automatic or automatic weapon with a high capacity magazine can be used as an assault weapon. Now who is stupid?
@wordywalt it is not a matter of stupidity. Until everyone is talking the same language nothing will change. I believe in gun laws and I want the laws enforced but if you have both sides calling each other stupid because they are disagreeing on word usage then what you have is exactly what you see in this string of posts -a total clusterf**k with no end in sight. Do you for one minute think that anything has been solved in these posts? No, we are all still at each other's throats with no common ground.
@AmelieMatisse Ignoring and trying to reason with the stupid is exactly how we got here. We had a 10 year ban on assault weapons and Bush Jr. let it run out. Mass killings dropped during that period. You cannot reason with the stupid because they are stupid. Stupid is real. Half the people in this country have IQs in double digits. That is a statistical fact.
@Sticks48 I do get that but how do we come together at the table and get past name calling? I have been watching these posting on this site for over a year and there is no headway. There isn't headway anywhere in the US with this situation. I have no idea how we change it. Perhaps if we vote our leaders out of office things will change but I really wonder for how long since the NRA will just start doling out their $$$ to the new congress and I fear that most politicians will go for the money as they do in so many things - look at big pharma, another killer.
@AmelieMatisse You and I have been watching this fight for decades, and it never changes. I don't believe significant changes will happen until our generation passes. The same can be said for a national health care system. For all of the bragging Boomers like to do about what we changed, we have been running things for awhile and done a really piss-poor job of it. Big changes generally happen when a generation passes. Sadly, the generation mucking everything up right now is us.
@Sticks48 I know. That is exactly what I told my grandson
Amazingly enough, there are, and apparently in large numbers. Remember, even though most of the people who voted did not vote for Trump, it showed there are millions of really, really STUPID people in this country. Always remember this when tough issues with common sense approaches pop up, and a ridiculous number of people oppose those fixes.
I have several that I use primarily in national match shooting (service rifle section). I also use them for bullet development in a hobby business (hence; BigPawBullets).
@Veteran229
Unknown. I carry a gun already. I don't watch the news..... too irritating.
@Veteran229
Probably won't sign it.
Heck. You're a veteran. You're in numerous databases already.
I can't imagine unless they are so militant which scares the shit out of me. We don't need white supremists plotting against us!
That's a rather unfair generalization, in my opinion. Most of my neighbors have AR15 type rifles. As veterans, that's the type firearm most are familiar with. I don't think any of us would be classified as militant.
I think we will all be shocked to learn how many people do not want a ban.
@bigpawbullets referring to the white supremisist movement -not your neighbors.
@AmelieMatisse National data says that over 65 percent of Americans want a ban on assault weapons. That means that you are in the minority.
