Staff woke me this morning when they arrived at 6am. i am usually awake around 4am.but so busy running the kennels and cattery and coping with weather that I am worn out. Mark, who has worked here for 8 years told me 'You look like a zombie walking around, take the day off, we've got this' - so I am relaxing....and maybe sleep a while too.
I have lost 8lb in the last 2 weeks - weather extremes have made work hard....hottest July days on record, followed by torrential rain and flooding and, virtually unknown in August, a gale is blowing through today. Keeping pets cool and drying them off after walks all takes extra time - easy with your pet at home, but when you have 45 dogs and 20 cats to sort out can easily be 2-3 hours additional work.
On top of all that we had an inspection - passed with flying colours as always.....but. New regulations have been introduced with a star ratings system. To meet the highest standard I have to increase the 'available area' in the cat chalets plus I must write a procedures manual.
The cat chalets need shelves replacing with bigger shelves to add 3 square feet - I don't think a cat will care if the shelf it lays on is 16 x 30 inch or 24 x 48 inch - costs me arond £300 and a few hours work to change.
Procedures and a manual, 'so your staff know how to work' is taking hours to write. My staff have all been here for years, know their job inside out and understand that if they are unsure - they ask. Everyone here is shown how to do the job during training, even down to most effective way to clean and disinfect a kennel floor. Having a manual will not be a benefit - apart from keeping a beaurocrat happy and gaining a top rating.
Sorry for a long rant - I hate clipboard wielding idiots who would not survive a real job telling me what i must do..... but doing it anyway.
I honestly think these star systems, or " company wide improvement goals", or advancement metrics... are just a leveling system. It lets managers mysteriously "identify" underperforming employees (Because the couldn't before?) And take action with cause (makes HR easier):. It also lets them erase any individual independence or above average performance that's not in the metrics. It turns organizational dynamics i to a 2D spreadsheet.
This is rating businesses for facilities and service quality and just introduced for Kennels and catteries in the UK. A similar star system rating food hygiene in restaurants was introduced some years ago - now, if a restaurant doesn't maintain cleanliness and control of food storage to get a high rating, it goes out of business - people vote with their feet once they know it is not clean.
Wow; 8 pounds in 2 weeks? That's serious weight loss. Consider reposting in "Battling Obesity" (go to Actions, click on the group name). Good job; especially considering all the stress!
Not even trying to lose weight - just working ridiculous hours and sometimes falling asleep before eating.
When I bought the kennels I was 18 stone and went down to 14 stone in 12 weeks - same reasons - exhaustion and not eating regularly.
I have at least one day each month when I don't eat - just drink water - done it for years

I've worked in state jobs twice. The paperwork bullshit is endless. People who work with animals aren't in it for the money!
I earn enough from the kennels, but much less than I used to have ... found that money does not make me happy
It's people like you that keep my faith in humanity! I'm sorry you have to deal with all the bureaucratic bullshit when you and your staff KNOW what must be done! Hope the weather improves soon!!
I am lucky with the staff here - all know as much as me about the day to day running and can be left - but I still feel obliged to be around and 'do my bit' each day.
Been a windy day, 50mph or so, but the rain didn't arrive, so not too bad
I had a very steady day - dealt with a few customers, made a large chilli, slept 2 hours after lunch - feel much better tonight (almost 10pm here now)
