Gods and Idols

Do these words mean different things to you? Do their definitions overlap?

Assuming that we are NOT talking about a hyperdimensional, time-traveling, omnipotent wizard, and assuming we are NOT talking about a golden statue of Baal, how would you use these words in a modern format?

An idol is an object which represents something worshiped. Gods do not exist.

We could idolize great thinkers. Anyone who puts Socrates or anyone else on a pedestal can be said to be idolizing. Some idolize nature. It's just that most people idolize a monotheistic god, so the definitions get conflated.

A god is an invisible friend and an idol is his representative. Neither have much significance.
