How many here never had religion or never was a believer? There are always posts about peoples struggle to come to terms with life as a recovering believer but I would like to hear from the "never believed".

My family never went to church unless it was a wedding. My dad was agnostic most of his life and atheist the last 20 yrs or so. He didn't discuss it. My mom was baptized at 8 and thought she was good with god for life ever after that. lol

My aunt took me to a UU church a few weeks but I was 6 or 7 and she was asked to not bring me back until I could stop being disrupting by asking questions. I wasn't buying Jonah and the Whale, I fished and I knew that crap was crap. We never went back.

Other than a few bible stories I knew from some Golden Books I had as a kid and the xmas stories I heard at school, until I was in high school that was pretty much my only exposure. I went to a few of my friends churches in high school if I spent the night on Sat night but it was all so phony and BS. I took a "bible as literature" class junior year but transferred out after the first week because the students wouldn't discuss it as literature but as history. I was not down with that. They dropped the class after that semester.

I learned more about the bible in atheist club meetings and conversations with atheists than anywhere. I have never read the bible even though I have our family bible with our birth records in it for 7 generations.

That is the total of my exposure. I'm sure I could never really comprehend the struggles believers have had but I still empathize with them and the grief is has cause many.

What's you "never a believer" story?

I was raised as a Unitarian Universalist to UU humanist parents. I got flak in middle school for being class feminist-atheist, but my true friends didn’t care I learned about the Bible from attending weekly after school Bible study with friends—there were snacks and prizes! As a UU, I also learned about myriad faith traditions and sources of wisdom from Sunday services.
I have read several books about the Koran and the Bible, including a fascinating one about errors made by Biblical translators and calligraphers, both intentional and not.
I am still a UU, I work for the national headquarters, and I am an itinerant lay speaker for Sunday services. You could say I’m all wrapped up in religion, but I remain a feminist atheist humanist.

We have that error book (title escapes me now) in our UU library. There have been more changes in the bible than there are words in the bible.

Same as you really. An interesting part of my schooling and hymns in assembly. No fear of God smiting me and throwing me into the eternal furnace.

Dabbled around with occult stuff in teens, then entered the world of work where no room for religious practices. Always been interested in physics and psychology which lead to study of religion, not just Christianity!

Messed around in the New Age playground in 90’s and got a BA (Hons) in Religious Studies. Never been effected by any of religion’s orthodoxy. To isolate religious thinking is an injustice to the human mind.

Religion is an aspect of being. Nothing to be afraid of, it’s the extreme people that are the unnerving as in any organised ideology, whether it be politics or sporting fraternities.

The people who were never really believers often tell stories about realizing what a bunch of bunk it was when they were very young. In our society, there's always something to tell about how you've dealt with religion.

Your experience sounds very similar to mine. We never went to church except for weddings. My aunt took me to church for a few months when I was in early elementary school but I just didn't connect it with anything more than stories. It wasn't real. I remember at one point them saying something like"someone is always watching you." It may have been watching over you, I don't know, but my little science kid brain was like, oh, right, because there are so many people in the world you can't possibly get away from everyone. I also remember one night I stole a cookie from the kitchen, then dutifully prayed to Jesus to ask for forgiveness and thinking "this is dumb." I think my mom got tired of arguing with me because I didn't want to get up early and wear a dress on Sundays. After that I never went except the time I got tricked into it. My friend asked if I wanted to eat pizza and watch a movie and I was like sure! She goes cool, it's at my church. And inwardly I was like damnit!

Every day to us is like a protest but we're love to do that 😋
They are religious people and serious people so I have to tickle on them😂, its a critical job you know 😂😂😂
