NIGHT PERSON or DAY PERSON?
Since retiring some nine years ago, I've allowed myself to become the "night person" I believe I always was. In childhood, I'd clandestinely stay awake into the wee hours with a radio hidden under the covers of my bed.
Convention dictated that I become a "day person" during my working years, but now--in retirement--I go to bed after breakfast at 4:00 A.M. and arise around 11:00 A.M. or whenever I feel sufficiently rested.
To me, it's great to be awake doing what I love to do (reading, writing, playing piano, going for (decaf) coffee at the local 24 hour WaWa, watching movies, etc.) while the rest of the world sleeps. The stillness and calm of the midnight hours are, to me, exquisitely beautiful.
Any other night owls out there?
Absolutely a day person. The first time I went to Paris I saw bistros and restaurants being open and full of people at midnight. I thought this was crazy. I lived in the old city of Heidelberg, a major student city. It was full of restaurants, Locals (bars) and clubs. We would go out and stay late and hit a restaurant (lots of Italian places in the city) late. Even so, 6 AM and I was wide awake.
I’ve always been a night owl...even when I really needed to get up early in the a.m....like yourself I had to force myself to conform more to the norms of rising earlier and even then I stayed up late. I’ve actually seen me staying up all night to finish a book if it was a real page turner.
@Winkiedink54 yes...! I know the feeling.
Count me in. Work and school were agony with me not falling asleep naturally until 2AM, while having to rise at 6. In retirement, I sleep from 2-10AM most days and am highly active/productive the rest of the time.
My kids and parents are/were the same way. Night owls.
Yes, I LOVE being part of both the day and night world. Running errands in the dark is an entirely different experience. I often choose to grocery shop then. Crowds are seldom a problem, though it can be slow going through aisles clogged with stockers. (;
I bounce back and forth between being a day person and a night person. For some reason tonight I'm a night person. Retirement means most of the time I can go to bed when I want to and get up when I want to. Sometimes it's 9 p.m. and sometimes it's 3 a.m. .
i was a shift worker in the RCAF & could get by on a few hours sleep day. i would get off a shift in the weather office at 8 AM & be on a golf course at noon. the shift work probably has something to do with my inability to get a good night's sleep now. seldom sleep more than 4 hrs at a time & that's a restless sleep. often i will take & diazepan at 4 to 5 AM read for 1/2 hr+ then doze. when i finally get up around 8 AM i seldom feel really rested.
one of the worst curses of old age.
Definitely! More fun things happen in the wee hours of the morning...or you can just take a peaceful stroll, depending on your location.
