Yay! I’ve just joined the ranks of blockers!! Always swore that I would never do it, but being called an “idiot” by a right-wing U.S. Republican finally did it. She thinks she knows more about Socialism than I do, when what she describes as Socialism is actually Communism, and when the differences are pointed out she says she knows better than the Socialist governments of Europe and Scandinavia, and calls them “clowns” who don’t really realise that they are not socialists at all! There is just nowhere to go with such a person, than to block their obdurate reasoning. Sorry folks, but I feel like I’ve failed....!

I've always tried to live by the Mantra that we can't learn anything from people that agree with us on everything.Like you I have reached my limit when I realize the conversation is between myself and a wall.

Precisely how I felt!

7

You have not failed at all. Sometimes it is necessary to put up a block with people who do nothing but waste your time with ignorant reasoning and a know it all attitude. For anyone to call you an idiot is beyond ridiculous!

Thank you...!

7

P.S. I actually managed to use my Uncommon Word Group post, one of which I post every day, and I just posted this morning, in that rant of mine too......Obdurate! 😂

Thanks! You just improved my vocabulary by one word! 😄

I used to feel bad about blocking people but I don't feel that way anymore. Discussions are fine, debates are fine, differing opinions are fine, but once they start a personal attack and they are not talking rationally, that is it. I think you would probably feel like you fail yourself more in the long run if you didn't block this person.

Yes...probably true.

6

You call it failure, when it's really success. To identify when there's no point trying any longer, does a good service to ourselves.

There are many people who deserve to be called idiots, but you're never one of them.

To her I say, bye!!

Thanks for your support!

Having witnessed your patience with some that others would have long since blocked, I do not doubt the offender must have certainly earned it.

Many are quick on the block finger here, sometimes to suppress a differing view. I don't think that describes you.

Thank you..I like to think I am quite a reasoned person.

6

We block people in real life. What is the difference? Block 164 more and you will catch me. 🙂

I’ve got a long way to catch up then!

Pretty sure it's that nut in Florida... Don't be afraid to use the block button. I find very little use for the Republican trolls who come on and make accusations and claim them as fact and then, in belligerent fashion, request you to prove them wrong. I have more exciting things to do! I have socks to dry!

Too true!

I am dying here . Who ? I suspect , but who ??

@Pralina1 I’m sending you a message!

4

I held off as long as possible. But like everywhere else online, the trolls sneak in. Name calling, totally unsubstantiated claims, complete denial of facts in favor of “I know better because I do”. I think I have three or four in blocked jail.

I’m hoping she’ll be the one and only!

@Marionville not likely. Debate can be interesting, but not when the other person figuratively plugs their ears and goes “da,da,da,da” when it’s your turn to talk. Or they are defending the indefensible; fascism, racism, murder, child neglect, and pedophiles. These should not only be blocked but reported.

4

I thought the same thing about blocking when I first joined this community... I've blocked a few since then...

Not me though...thanks! 😁

We have the same problem with the swivel-eyed, spittle- lipped Brexiteers....who’s only mantra seemed to be “Brexit means Brexit!”....but now that has changed to “We just need to leave, Deal or No Deal!” Morons!!

@Marionville It is a neck to neck race as to who is the bigger Fool, the Orange Communist Turd or Halfwit Johnson ?

@GEGR A dead heat!

3

You don't need to be called names, & have much better things to do with your time than put up with that know-it-all nonsense. I'd block too.

Yes...probably should have done it earlier.

@Marionville I have come to zero tolerance for being called names. I don't care what the topic is, if I get called any derogatory name....I'm done.

3

I fully understand. One should be able to ignore some people. When that fails one could (and I have done so) reported the person. So far I have not had to block anyone but time will tell.

I thought I would never need to use the ultimate sanction of “blocking”... it’s rather like a last resort.

@Marionville I understand the problem of being backed into a corner.

@JackPedigo sadly it is!

I've been here nearly a year now, and haven't had to block anyone. But then, nobody ever messages me! I check every day. But not a single "hello", "get lost", or "howya doin?" (Somehow, I feel "unloved"!).

This wasn’t in a message...it was after we had had a lengthy discourse on a post.

@Marionville I didn't know you could block posts. (How do you do that?).

@davknight Go to the profile page of the person you wish to block and click on the block button...it’s on the right hand side.

@Marionville Thank you!

2

sounds like someone i've blocked.
don't feel like you've failed. there are some truly hopeless, dumb assholes here that are not worth wasting time on.

I’m just beginning to realise that.

2

I always found you rational and reasonable. Sorry had to endure another ignorant republican rant. They can be vile.

Sadly she had a view that she, and only she knew the definition of Socialism!

2

I'm not going to guess publicly, but I'm pretty sure I know who you're referring to. She really is a pretty vile human being, and I don't think you have anything to gain from seeing her posts and comments.

No...I have come to reluctantly realise that is true!

It happens

bobwjr Level 10 Sep 24, 2019

Yes...but it’s sad that it has to happen.

@Marionville yup had to do it also

I have the occasional discussion with old FB friends who are stuck in the 1970's-80's machismo mentality and ignorants on several issues, but this demonization of Socialistic practices seem to drive them crazy the most.
I ask them, "Do you agree that any program that is designed to serve the masses and is funded by tax dollars is a socialist program?" They can't articulate a disagreement, but I can tell they want to because they know I'm going somewhere with it. They often try to preemptively say, "That's what's wrong with our country now!"
Ultimately they agree with how I defined it. So then, after pointing out that we have been spending monumentally more money, over all, on socialist programs for many, many decades than those other countries, and then point out that we are the most powerful and successful Socialist Nation in the history of the World.
Their cognitive dissonance cripples their speech and their guarded tone dampens to near zero.

We all know that back in those earlier years, our money bought more, and our savings accounts returned 6-8 times more than we get today. A service station attendant could afford a house. This longing for the "good old days" seems to be what drives (at least) some towards staunch fiscal conservatism. When this admission comes out, the last thing I say to them is this:
Democrats and Republicans are both conservative. Republicans want to conserve money, the tool for managing resources, and Democrats want to conserve those same resources for future generations. Capitalism relies 100% on the economy's continuing growth. That growth relies on the movement of money. To sustain that level of monetary movement, we have to continue to embrace the disposability of goods(resources) mentality, and we can not afford to do that anymore.

Idiocy must once have had a workable definition e.g.slowest person in the village. Now it is just a put down for any and wide purposes for people who cannot make their feelings clear or useful. Only way to know about socialism is to live it. She hasn't .Ignore.

I tried to educate her to the real meaning of 21st century Socialism...as it is practiced by successful governments in a variety of countries, but she was wedded to a definition she had read in an outdated American dictionary, and was arrogant enough to say that those countries who called themselves socialist were wrong...calling them clowns, and me an idiot. That was when I decided that I was flogging a dead horse with her...and pulled the plug!

I have a few stalkers who constantly attack my ideas. They are all left-pole sitters.

The rule is "Don't feed the trolls." So i seldom engage them.
