I am curious to know how many of you maintain friendships with religious people (particularly those in your religious past). I have a very good friend who is a Mormon and he knows where I stand as an agnostic yet we are able to carry on as if those differences do not even exist.

I have a friend (and her entire family) that I've known since second grade (I'm 60 now). They have always been evangelicals, and they have always lived up to what they were taught in church. They also voted for Trump, though I'm pretty sure most of them won't this time around. Occasionally we talk religion or politics, but not usually. We do, however respect each others views on them.

My sister is also a Christian, not not as evangelical as my friend. Interestingly, she's more rabid about her beliefs. She can talk her religion all she wants, but when I talk my non-religion she claims I'm being biased.

Some people are not intimidated by people who don't believe. My sister apparently isn't one of them. When I do point out conflictions in her beliefs she just tells me she doesn't want to think about it, or makes up so mumbo-jumbo about why I'm wrong.

i don't have a religious past and don't have religious friends with whom to retain friendships or not. i do have a kind of friendship with the daughter of a good friend of mine, but i hide most of her facebook posts as they are so jesussy (i have never been a christian, myself, anyway). my guy has an old friend who is an evangelical and she crossed a line last time we met so i am prepared to tell her off if it happens again, but we only talk a couple times a year. we're cordial but she knows i am an atheist and she knows richard and i are jewish at any rate; last time we met she prayed over him and told him not to reject jesus. that is what crossed the line; richard was oblivious as he doesn't hear well and has alzheimer's at any rate. he was shocked when i told him. i can't think of anyone else. oh yeah, someone with whom i play an online game. in the game we don't talk politics or religion. on facebook she posts the most dreadful lies about liberals, and some jesus stuff. i hide it all but first i respond reproachfully correcting the political lies i HOPE she is inadvertently sharing. and now that really is it.

I've got a good friend who is religious - Methodist. But she isn't prone to often saying "Because god".

That's often the factor that drives me nuts - when religious people put everything off on sky-daddy with no personal responsibility for anyone else.
I have trouble with folks who have no sense of responsibility. Everything is left up to their god like it's a big crap shoot.
It's exhausting trying to be friends with someone with magical beliefs like that.

Most of my religious friends have in time followed me out of religion, I don't raise the fact that I am an atheist, but if they ask I will answer their questions.
