Time to have churches pay tax. They want to play politics. Time to pay for playing!
I believe churches should pay the same as everyone else in taxes and that amount certainly as far as I am concerned is 0!!!!
They should have been taxed all along. If we truly intend to maintain separation of church and state (this means all religions) we should not be subsidizing them through special dispensations.
This has nothing to do with them making money, although many of them learned long ago how to play the system for all it's worth. No, my position is that all citizens pay taxes for the benefits of a free society, for the services the government provides (local, state, and federal) and religion should not be given a special status because it's religion.
As it has been for many years, religion has been allowed to amass real estate, ornate and elaborate structures, etc. without having to put much into the system. I have no problem where they are doing charity work (real charity work and not ministry scams) to give them exactly what any other secular charity organization gets from the government. That is reasonable, but anything that smacks of subsidy/special dispensation should cease -- and there is a lot of it.
Remember our war of independence was about taxation without representation. The religious want and have representation without taxation AND they want even MORE.
