"We can judge our progress by the courage of our questions and by the depth of our answers; our willingness to embrace what is true rather than what feels good," ~ Carl Sagan.
Wonderful!
Reminds me of how I view Christians who will seemingly never loosen there white knuckled grip on their beliefs. It’s what feels good. It’s cozy in that cocoon of ignorance and denial of intellect. They are hooked on a feeling. I even have a soundtrack for it:
And welcome Justin!
That's awesome. I was just pondering the depth of meaning on conversation and perception of the recipient. Sometimes things get lost because language can impede those that wish to portray vs the audience that is available.
Courage being the key word here...it takes courage and a great deal of self confidence to stand up for truth against populism.
Correct, but just try and question some prevailing mores. Liberals and conservatives are about equal in not practicing critical thinking on some issues. People would rather feel inside a box than think outside of it.
Sometimes you have to go with your gut feelings. There might not be time or means to do a logical analysis. Even if you do a logical analysis you can still be wrong.
Truth is not absolute.
I rather be the only man standing with the truth than lie with dogs. It makes one of the strongest men in the world.
One of the wisest scientists I believe. Never found much to fault!
Our present day progress puts us at approx. 400 A.D....the end times for philosophy. The recent re-emergence is a postive sign, but it is still an Elephant vs. House Fly game.
The recent re-emergence is very recent indeed. I'm no philosophy major, but the pushback against religion and indoctrinantion is barely what ....100Yrs. old? And don't think for second that for them this isn't war. It's not about "rights" or 'Votes" or even "morals". It's POWER and they have their reasons (none good) for hating the Western Liberal Democracies.
Not sure what you are referring to in your first paragraph.
@Geoffrey51 Some time between 4 &500 AD philosophy was officially banned in Athens and the last "Academy" closed.
@twill okay, I’m with you now.
