Do you feel are intrinsic moral code could be more complex then only natural selection would exhibit. Leading one to think either apes are a morally superior species or we have some since of a higher self spiritual or not. I.e not ALL humans exhibit higher moral inclinations.
Im on that side but being devils advocate. why do many of us want to change the world make life for others better say starving ethiopians
There is no such thing as "an intrinsic moral code" the only thing to be found in nature is what is, not what ought.
An intrinsic moral code would vary according to the degree of self-awareness and sentience of a given being. One would expect humans to have a more elaborate code in general than other animals, and for individual humans to have better or worse developed / compete moral codes with varying levels of compliance with consensus societal morality.
It isn't a question of a "higher" or "spiritual" self. It is just something that organically arises from our interactions with each other. Any time two humans have to coexist or cooperate, morality becomes a consideration. Apart from that, it's irrelevant.
Some great figures Ghandi Martin Luther King exhibit higher moral functioning then natural selection would seem to cause. Others are worse morally then the animal kingdom by far.
