The climber, Brad Gobright, tragically feli 300m to his death
Using my bit of schoolboy physics from 50 years ago
V = U + at
8 Seconds falling under gravity = final speed of 8 x 9.8 = 78.4 m/s
Assuming linear acceleration – average speed would be 39.2m/s
So in 8 seconds the climber would fall 8 x 39.2 = 313.6m
The climber hit the deck after just under 8 seconds at approximately 75m/s
I have very little knowledge of biology / biochemistry …. So my query is
How much adrenaline can the body generate in 8 seconds?

This is very distressing to me, as my son is a rock climber. He overcame many of his autistic symptoms to go to college, work double shifts at a physically demanding job, and cultivate a social life via climbing. Anyone who would criticize someone who does this and loses his life, has no empathy for people who do this, or the reasons why they do.
did not mean to upset anyone ... sorry for that
Climbers and most other 'dangerous sports' are attractive to those peoploe who like to be on the edge, pumped with adrenaline and risking death ... sometimes it goes wrong, but you can be sure that whoever dies did so doing something they love
I hope your son climbs without incident, but I also hope that when his time comes, he dies happy knowing that he lived well
It would be one of the last things I’d encourage either of mine to do.
Very sad he lost his life. My only thought is he must not have valued his life all that much to do something so dangerous.
I think he placed a higher value on his life than most: he grabbed life with both hands, wrestled the best out of it and died doing what he loved.
Better to be a lion for a day than a lamb for a lifetime
@ShadowAmicus and now he’s dead. I don’t see how what he did in getting himself killed as grabbing life with both hands. He threw life away.
@Redheadedgammy but he lived doing what he loved .... and died doing what he loved .... what better life could there be
@ShadowAmicus what better life could there be? LIVING is much better. We will have to agree to disagree on this subject.
@Redheadedgammy agreed ... we disagree
@ShadowAmicus I think it is a safe bet that was not his final thought as he watched the earth racing toward his face.
I still think ‘climbers’ are crazy. As in - really, you’re so out of touch with life that you need to risk it in order to feel, anything..? So, is it OK to admit I laughed pretty good over your calculations. (and still am )..
it isn't that people risk life because without it they feel nothing
but balanced on the edge of death - you feel so much more
@ShadowAmicus By definition, insanity does not add up.
Having hiked many pristine Cascade Mountain trails, if one’s in tune with life & nature.. there’s no need to risk death climbing cliffs. Spent last summer on a motorcycle, though … very addictive
With regard to your original question/ calculation, I wondered if the adrenaline rush might cause a heart attack, thus death prior to hitting the ground? I’d be terrified! ...though, with their climbing mindset.. maybe they feel “balanced”
