Four years ago, i told my parents that i was an atheist and that i liked girls. Keep in mind that my mother is a fundamentalist Christian and my father is a fundamentalist Muslim. They both asked me if i was possessed lol. It went better then i had initially expected.
The fact that they are in a relationship despite being fundamentalist members of different religions suggests they're both actually a lot more open-minded, understanding and tolerant than the majority of people who are given that label.
Oh, no, they aren’t together anymore, they divorced when i was five. I called them both together to tell them the news.
@averykings Were they religious to the same degree prior to their divorce?
@Jnei yes
@averykings Interesting. I don't have much respect for fundamentalist religious people of any flavour, but fair play to them for getting together despite their differences. I'm glad they were accepting when you told them
@Jnei thanks, same with me, i don't respect their beliefs, but i respect their rights to their beliefs.
I am glad it didn't go badly for you.
Thanks.
It is a commonly expected reaction. I am sure they will ponder for some time, show some disappointment but will come around soon to accept your choices and ask you to invite your girlfriend home to meet all.
My daughter is straight so far but has some lesbian friends. She mentioned in high school that she was not sure if she liked boys or girls. It blew my wife's top. It did not bother me at all. I told that her health, well being, security and happiness were above her sexual preferences. If she has the 4 elements well together, her choice would be fine with me. But make the choice after she had other things together... a boyfriend or a girlfriend should come after finishing school, getting a job, settling and being on her feet. Not the cart before the horse... lol
Yeah, i could see that they disproved initially especially my mother but she eventually realised that my happiness was the most important thing to her. I was so scared to tell them at first, i thought they’d hate me and start inviting me to church again, but none of that happened. She still asks once in a while if i still like men lol
@averykings I wanted to tell daughter (a joke) that she should have a rich husband in a community property state, have a child, leave him, take the money and live with a good girlfriend for good but held myself back. I think children is the best experience. The artificial procedure is very expensive.
@St-Sinner aw haha you seem like a great dad.
Well, that took courage, or desperation, or both ... glad you're alive and if you weren't already out of the nest by then I am glad you apparently weren't thown out onto the street.
My parents were fundamentalist Christians but came to it fairly late in life, after other forces had already formed them as decent human beings, so both they and my three older siblings aren't as nosy and impertinent about such things as is common. I also deconverted pretty late in life, at a time when I lived thousands of miles from them, so I confess I took the coward's route and never brought the topic up. In fairness to myself, they were elderly and infirm and I didn't see the point in upsetting them.
Thanks, at first I didn’t see the point of telling them and i had the ‘whatever happens, happens’ sort of attitude. I deconverted fairly young (around 14) , but i still help onto my faith desperately because i was afraid of the consequences. I eventually let it go after a couple of months of studying other religions
What had you expected?
I expected my parens to make a big deal about how bisexuality was not good and “natural” because God disproved of it, i also expected them to start inviting me to church again. But instead i got “are you happy?”, I answered yes.
