So they see it as a step closer to the Jetsons where people fly to destinations instead of driving.

I definitely can see a purpose for that. Particularly in more remote areas where there aren't rail systems. A runway and a plane of this type could accommodate a Village of folk perhaps. (I'm thinking like they do in Alaska). Get folks into the city far more easily.

Gore Vidal flew his daddy's auto plane when he was ten years old YOUNGEST EVER Atheist pilot

I didn't see anything about expected range. I seriously doubt this would be economically viable except maybe for smaller planes like this. I also view this as unnecessary, since netzero fuels can be synthesized without having to make any changes to airplanes.

All down to battery storage as a guess.

@RavenCT solar wings and fuselage can make day travel lengthy beyond battery range landing on rivers or large ponds/canals without asphalt and giant airports reducing congested airports and cleaner air in cities

@Larry68Feminist Definitely water planes. Makes a lot of sense.

We used to watch them land on small lakes all summer long. It would have been great if they were more environmentally friendly.

There are also craft that look a lot like drones - only designed to lift humans.... I imagine those could have a lot of use if they got them working in that fashion too. They could be fitted with solar collectors on the top. (As the rotors are set off to the four corners).
