Sometimes I have a hard time understanding the Democratic party. Union members are picketing the the Democratic debate!! Does the union think trump is a better option? Yes, I know they are picketing for a well deserved pay raise and benefits but WTF? Choose your battles wisely. Picket the opposition. Am I wrong or is there a lack of organization and planning here?
This is the primary season. Now is the time to do whatever you can to get the democrats to nominate a candidate who has a strong chance of beating Trump.
The labor dispute has nothing to do with the debates other than the coincidence that they're happening in the same place at the same time.
Even Biden has the sense to respect their pickets.
Some things are more important than skipping one debate. They won't be that substantive until it's down to less than five on the stage anyway.
Besides, the Democratic Party is supposed to be the party of the working man. What kind of optics would it be to cross picket lines for political purposes? Honestly, apart from Sanders, this is the most solidarity Democrats have shown for organized labor in a very long time. And honestly I suspect the others just don't want to look bad when Sanders won't cross the line and they will.
My point is to why are they picketing the Democratic debates, not who is crossing the line. You're shooting yourself in the foot if you picket the people that might help you. It's the Dems that are pushing for higher wages. The Repubs are giving themselves tax cuts.
@rogueflyer They are not picketing the debates. They are picketing their employer, the university. The debate just happens to be there. It is however a great opportunity for the democratic candidates to demonstrate that their kinship with these worker's struggle for a fair labor contract is more than just a theoretical position.
@mordant That's a fair response. As a union member I can't say whether I'd picket or not. As a Klobachar supporter I hate to see the missed opportunity to speak in public with the primaries in a few weeks and the impeachment taking place.
@rogueflyer Your response is also fair. The exposure is more important for Amy than for the top 3, particularly when it's a struggle to qualify each time.
I don't see a downside for Sanders, who is my horse in this race. It's right in his wheelhouse and he's showing leadership. His support is growing organically through his ground game and I suspect he can afford to skip a debate more than any other candidate.
That said, I still don't see much value in the debates until it's down to 4 or fewer people. Moderators seem to struggle coming up with substantive and informative questions as it is, and then everyone gets a hot minute to answer and it's not a very informative 2 or 3 hours. Everyone just hopes they get a good sound bite, basically.
There must be some conservative union members? So the dems are being brainwashed at such a high level, too. The current admin is manipulating the numbers regarding prosperity,the house of cards expected to stand until the opposition to current President is buried. I work in a Union hospital, majority is evangelical or catholic. They march in direction that where they're pointed. Is Bernie still leading Union candidate? He could possibly get through to them. This is truly frightening development. Business cannot be the only concern omg.
Sometimes I wonder if they have any planning and unity in the party. Republicans can unify behind a corrupt nut case but Dems are all over the place.
@rogueflyer WTF is right
If they are like the Unions in Europe they know they have been sailed up the river by the political left as they jostle for power in the centre.
It’s not a Trump/no Trump issue. It’s ‘you bastards have fucked us over’
