Lots of people I know of do home schooling. It’s not a predominately Christian thing in Australia or Europe.

Seems good so long as you have the ability to do it properly, but I understand it can be very stressful.

I think that in Germany it is illegal, a criminal act. Used to be anyway, 5+ years ago.

my take on it is that most homeschoolers are christians trying to shield their kids from any kind of critical thinking, and the outside world in general. however, there are those who homeschool their kids due to bullying, as some have said here, and i know someone who has had that experience. her daughter is an extremely intelligent and compassionate girl who was bullied in public school, and has ptsd with many triggers on top of the autism. she is thriving as a homeschooled student.

however, i think the latter case is an exception and homeschooling is still the domain of extreme christians, and that is a pity not only for the kids involved but for the nation.

My daughter has been home schooling my grand children , for most of their lives , due to constant bullying when my grand daughter started kindergarten , which the school teachers and principle did nothing to avert . They did attend one year of public school later , and my grandson the younger of the two was tested for his level . He scored a reading level of third grade , just after he was admitted to kindergarten , at age five .

we chose k-12 at first and got books and rock collections and equipment for experiments and reg testing and he has to go to star testing every year unlike my granddaughter who just went to a ladies house and they did some learning but nothing structured
the online schools have scheduled lessons

I don't believe our children should have anything to do with the system. End of discussion. I believe we need to educate our children, not arguing that point! But I believe we need to have the freedom to choose and to not have a freaking system orchestrating what the hell we do with our children when it comes to what they learn.

In other words, what we have been force-fed when we were in school, how much of it is actually true? Because they said it was true it's true? Because it was taught to us it was true? LOL
There is an agenda being served is the reason for the public school system

I don't have any children as of yet. I would like to state that what i see is observations and my understanding of what it appears to be rather than judgment. I have thought about it myself of whether I will have any, will I adopt down the road or will i become involved with a female who has them. I think being a parent can be one of the most joyous and difficult things there is in life. As far as teaching them, I think we have a built in bias, but i would also think that a child gives us a gift as well to help us rethink what we think we know.

A bias in teaching as most generally have a set of beliefs whether its athiest, christian or whatever. We have experiences in our life that led us their. We want to protect, I think its a good quality but like anything else its practice. What I observe is people attempting to teach from their belief set. I practice not to judge them for that simply to observe and question within myself, use this information to look into my own history, deal with my own issues. I think as much as we would practice to teach children that they teach us. I make it a practice to still learn, to know I am not right about everything. I attempt to practice having a good idea rather than a belief system or BS.

I practice not to judge someone who does, and considering my own words as I read them I think i should say I am far from a saint. I consider it maintenance now to work on me, work with a counselor and go to meetings for pursuit of dealing with my issues and choosing peace instead of what ever else is out there. I love the idea of the peaceful warrior, the true battles are on the inside the battle for peace.

In homeschooling or regular schooling i think it is a difficult choice, both have pros and cons. For a lot of this life I chased after knowledge, I still practice learning. For a long time I thought if i could just know more about something I could control it more. It's my idea though that the subjects and information I was learning although helpful wasn't my real issue. My real issues were the ones I was running from. I practice facing them now. Part of the issue was attempting to control and learning to find balance with that. While I would still practice being mindful about what a child is taught, part of that is looking at the whole. I can't control everything in my life and it brought chaos attempting to and the same may come from trying to fully control a childs as well.

I guess personally I would hope to find a good place outside the home. The idea that I need to take myself out of the equation some and let someone teach who has the passion for teaching and get out of my own way, I have gotten in my own way a lot. I think of the perfect teacher and I picture various roles by Robin Williams.

teaching them to question themselves even and call them on it

Theres so much more, i could post videos all day.

I practice gratitude for where I am now, and the journey that brought me here but I think I would have difficulty wishing that on someone else, especially a child. How do you pass that on? Wayne Dyer is a personal inspiration of mine, and his work with his own children and himself. He changed an older quote in one of his video specials to say I had 8 Theories on raisng children and now I have 8 children and no theories.

Everyone thinks they know what is best for others. Teach your children what you want them to know. The responsibility of a parent for time immemorial. Sometimes it makes sense to farm it out. Other times it makes sense to keep it in house.

Well said right to the point

Depending on the experience, motive and diligence of the '"schooler" I can see how it can be a positive for some people. And there can certainly be a case made for how educational systems do a great disservice to many students.

But without consistency of some kind kids flounder.

I think it is mostly religious based. Some Jewish communities also do a lot or exclusively. There are a few non-religious that home school for various reasons. But how good the schooling is depends on how good the home school “teacher” is. If all they teach is is religious dogma, the kids education will be lacking or at least colored in a way that lacks critical thinking skills. If they aren’t patient or good at explaining things in different ways until someone gets it, again the education will be lacking. You can have cruddy teachers at school, but you aren’t stuck with the all day for years.

For 3 years in elementary I went to a small church that used basically home based curriculum. In subjects I could excel at I was able to move on, in subjects I was not as good at, I had time and was not forced to finish them faster just to finish a semester. The circilum was call P.A.C.E. if I remember right. I really liked it a lot.

If I could had stayed with that curriculum rather than the school closing, I could of started College at about 15 but got stuck back in public school and still have not been able to finish college. That was 25 years ago when I did finish regular public school at 18.

I have a conservative friend that homeschooled her children for years. Her oldest daughter transitioned to junior high with no issues. He oldest son had to repeat a grade because his science wasn't up to snuff. They all graduated, but they still consider the sciences (geology, evolution, etc) as secular teachings with no basis in fact.

I actually feel sorry for them, but that's the way they want to live. I just don't understand being so immersed/brainwashed that learning is a bad thing.

Like at school it depends upon the teacher. This is a very specialist skill and most do not possess this skill but probably think they do, or they wouldnt be doing this.
There will be exceptions of course but generally its a bad idea ,
Those who disagree you may be correct, but you are statistically wrong
