Afterlife thoughts...

Do you believe in an afterlife? Even if you do not believe in the Jesus and Christianity role model perhaps there is still an afterlife. It might not be what we think of as an afterlife.

Who knows ? No one does for sure.

When we do know we will not be able to tell anyone.

SO....who believes in an afterlife even if they are agnostic? I'm pretty sure atheists do not. Again, I could be wrong.

Thoughts anyone?

The recording I posted was a real recording. I did hear the words "This is your mother." Many of you scoffed at it but i didn't rig that recording.

Did no one else give it a second thought?

I've been in search of this answer for a very long time. It's why I dabble with the ghost theory and the supernatural. I've never SEEN a ghost but again how do those words come out clearly to me. Are they what I thought I would hear, so I heard them?

No, I don't believe. I fully reject the Abrahanic beliefs as just plain B.S. I remain an agnostic, as, yea, I don't, FULLY, know what comes next. If science finds consciousness is more than a bunch of firing neurons, then I might think something comes later, but it sure isn't some fairy tale.

afterlife is not by any means exclusively or even originally an abrahamic belief. it is older and more varied. however, i am with you in disbelieving in any of it.

I listened to your earlier posting, as I expected you were using a spirit box app, these things have been so debunked you may as well have been using a Ouija board.
I isolated the "communication" and told four members of my family that it said
In reality I am another
Luke I am your brother
You should love one another
and Darling it's you mother

The each heard exactly what I told them was being said, because that is what they were listening for.
To me all I heard were seven to ten whispers of wild sound and or microphone scratches.

I thank you for genuinely listening to it, and for your comments.

You are correct in presuming most atheists do not believe in an afterlife.

What pays for this do over? How long does it last? What makes you presume anyone or anything passes unaffected to some other existence after their destruction? What would preserve, what would maintain, to what useful end? Sounds like wishing to believe what one might prefer whether it makes sense or not.

No, by definition we will be dead.🤣

All we know is that our understanding of such matters is limited. There are many unknowable situations relating to our worlds.

I don’t know if there is an afterlife but I have had experiences which belie what we think we know about existence.

I don’t know of the recording you mentioned so I will see if it is available In your history.

Try not to be too hard on those who scoff as they have not had your experience and should your experience be proven to be so it would challenge their world view, very much like the Christian being given evidence that Jesus was not what they thought he might be.

Good luck with your search.

This would need to defy the current laws if physics. Our current laws if physics work very well. It's why our smartphones work. It's why planes fly. Those planes fly because the engineers understood physics. There has never been any evidence submitted that ghosts exist, and we have not observed any phenomena that suggests they should exist, and there is no physical basis for them to exist in. There is no need for them to exist because all macro-scale observations being made today can be explained by our existing knowledge of science. What types of physical matter would ghosts form? Also, as we are animals, and all animals die, there would be trillions upon trillions of animals in said heaven. But why is there a physical need for heaven, outside theology? There isn't.

There would equally be as many animals in Hell and according to Theist belief, exponentially more.

@jlynn37 Agreed, and if you include bacteria, of which there are trillions in every human, the numbers of people in either heaven or hell start getting extremely large.

I find the idea fascinating and if I were to ever actually SEE a ghost it would probably turn my whole world on its head....but I have yet to find any evidence that any such thing exists.

Exactly what I'm saying. No evidence but that does not mean it does not exist.

@JustLuAnn There's a hotel here in my town, the Manresa Castle, which is supposedly haunted. I would definitely go ghost hunting there....but I'd be the smartass in the group. The Bill Murray, so to speak.

No, I don't believe there is an afterlife. Everything rots except the bones...all gone!

Kind of hard to believe in something that doesn’t exist.

I have no reason to believe in an afterlife.

I think we each only live once. I mean, if you died and woke up in Heaven, or Hell, or as a ghost or however it might be imagined, it's just another day. Right?? Sure, your body has been relocated to some other world/realm perhaps, but if you're still you then you never really "died"...

1

No! And if you have any credible evidence to the contrary, show lt! The burden of proof is on the person making the claim. You believe in the supernatural, so be it, but for me to 'believe' you have to give me something more than a ghost story.

I'm not asking you to believe. I'm stating what I believe or think in hopes to clarify for me.

@JustLuAnn Fair enough but how do you know that your experience is valid? I agree that you had a subjective experience but so what, anyone can make that claim.

@Atheist3 That's exactly the point. I don't know and that's why I posted this to get some additional thoughts and clarity.

@JustLuAnn The question is choice? To be or not to be, that is the question. My opinion, birth, life & death. Leaves no choice. But to love the life.

We hear what we want to hear. ... For example....

You may remember this. ... Fifty years ago, a Detroit DJ accidentally started the biggest hoax in rock & roll history: the “Paul is dead” craze. It blew up on October 12, 1969, when Russ Gibb was hosting his show on WKNR. A mysterious caller told him to put on the Beatles’ White Album and spin the “number nine, number nine” intro from “Revolution 9” backwards. When Gibb tried it on the air, he heard the words, “Turn me on, dead man.” The clues kept coming. At the end of “Strawberry Fields Forever,” John says, “I buried Paul.” What could it all mean?

It means nothing. it's coincidence.

I mentioned this in another thread, but it seems apt for this as well.
You are right in that there is no way toknow, and even if you could know, there is no way to share that information. I can't dissagree with that.
But consider one thing.
When posed with the question of an after life, most who feel there is such a thing, will posit that there must be something. Believer in god or not.
The one common denominator in that is that it is hard to think of 'nothingness', the very idea of just stopping with out any thing farther is just not something many can, or are willing to accept.
So I pot this in that light to a question. What, or who were you before you were born.
Yes there are those that will give the 'past lives thing. But if that isn't the case, then the idea of nothingness before you were born, is just the same as after you die. ,... nothingness. JMHO.

The words might be in your head. I hear words especially if I am tired. No one is talking to me. They are just words like having something on in the background. We do so many repetitious things and often do have way too much on in the background for comfort, and even some to be able to sleep. You are hearing what you want to hear.

Years ago my musician friend and I heard words coming out of his analog guitar amplifier. Very faint but they proved to be coming from the local radio station. Some people hear words due to dental work. Some people just want to hear something.

Is there an afterlife? IDK and neither does anyone else. My belief in ghosts and the supernatural went out the door with my belief in gods.

Did you listen to the recording or the video?

1

No I don't believe in an after life, I think evolutioin is the truth, I don't believe in dying, or growing very old,and getting heath issues, I don't think surviving loved ones should go through grief and or financial dispair of loosing a loved one, i believe in eternal youth and no diseases like cancer or other ailments, growing to a certain age, and stop aging, like forty or fifty years old.

oh dear...I'd be dead already instead of having a birthday today. You sound like Soylent Green (Old movie)

1

I do not believe in an afterlife because our experience of time is mere illusion, created by consciousness as a way of managing sensations. With every moment of conscious awareness we are in “heaven”, with heaven being a more real, higher realm than our illusory world of senses.

The sense of being an individual person as a body is also illusion. By realizing our oneness with the entire chain of organisms, or with consciousness itself, we come to see that the idea of afterlife is meaningless. Our true collective Self is immortal by default.

It's about as plausible as silicon heaven where all dead calculators go

Belief has nothing to do with it….

I do not know about dead people but the living have ghosts. Often I work in strangers' homes, They trust me and go out, then leave me too it. On these occasions, I find that a radio is invaluable. People give off vibes and when you are not around it is spooky to be there in your home. A radio seems to dispel these feelings. Just having another voice around seems to make it alright.
I know this is all explainable by psychology and science but the feelings seem real. Maybe this is part of what people feel when they see ghosts.
Has anybody else ever been this situation? (For legitimate reasons only please)

I suggest you read The Atheist Afterlife, by David Straume.
