I am currently watching the Hollywood epic "The greatest story ever told". Should be good for a laugh.
As I understand it Jesus was sentenced and crucified for sedition, but the Jews hated the Romans, and Pilate washed his hands of the affair. so it doesn't make a lot of sense. Why would the Jewish people want someone who spoke out against the hated Romans killed ?

Got the right script at last!
Robert Powell certainly showed his acting ability. I don't know how he managed to keep a straight face when delivering some of the banal lines as Jesus.

Best part of that film is John Wayne as the Centurion. “Surely this warz the son of Gard!”

I don't think that the film is an accurate account of any of the four biblical stories, and many people before have said that the bible stories themselves do not make any sense anyway. One common theory is, that Paul was responsible for putting a pro Roman twist on to the story, but that it was not done very well and the gaps show.
Remember though that the Romans were very busy executing dozens of Jewish saviors, and that in times of trouble, resistance movements can be very fractional, so it is possible that at least one of the many would be Jewish leaders fell foul of his/her own authorities, who may of course have been quizlings trying to make a compromise with the Romans. Remember things get complicated, Josephus for example, started as a Jewish rebel, became an informant, and ended as the Emperors scribe, secretary and biographer. With some people saying, that he was bribed by the Emperor with the original copies of the Jewish Old Testament looted from the temple in Jerusalem. (Some then go on to say that he was the forger of the Gospels, but that is pure conspiricy theory.)

Yes the film was pure Hollywood.Classic quote from a roman legionaire towards the end in a pure NY accent. "Truly he is the son of gawd"
It did follow the gospels to an extent in that it was the Jews who wanted Jesus crucified not the Romans. Telly Savalas as Pilate did the hand washing scene and not a lolipop to be seen

The story is that the centurion scene included in the final cut was the least worst version of "The Duke" slurring his way through the quote.
David Lean was directing the scene, and kept telling Big John to show more reverence
"John do it with more awe," he demanded, "Lots of awe, for the christ!"
Wayne apparently was so fed up of being in his knee freezing roman uniform which he claimed made him look like a "Kansas city faggot", took a deep breath and launched in to an uncanny impersonation of Jimmy Stewart
"Awwwwww this man was Awwwwwww surely the son of Awwwwwww Gawd!" he bawled, threw down his spear and walked off the set never to return.
@Moravian Yes it was on our TV last night, only caught a bit of it, but Telly Savalas asks Jesus what god it is he follows. So are we to think that, he is living in an empire where there is a huge Jewish population, and has been made govenor of the Jewish state, and he does not know what god the Jews worship ?!!!
