I filled out a short personal information form tonight, in order to receive some New Year's Eve memorabilia. Questions included your name, email address, gender, and one I haven't seen before--"Do you identify as transgender?" Seemed like an oddly invasive question to me. The one "trans" person I know has made it clear to me that she went through all she went through to identify as--and to fully be--a woman, not a "trans woman." What do you think?
That’s weird. Kind of sounds like there is some other purpose to the questionnaire. My program collects demographic data including gender identity, with several options including transgender and allowing people to choose all that they feel apply to them. Something seems strange to me to ask that separately.
It seemed odd to me as well. I would like to think they asked for a legitimate, positive reason.
What kind of memorabilia were you receiving. That does seem to be an odd question, and I wonder what you were offered for that information.
The memorabilia is pretty nice--a large clear plastic Happy New Year Pendant that lights up.
I'd be bothered by that question in that context. Only place for that question, that I can think of, would be a healthcare provider.
I know that some organizations are struggling to make their way of dealing with the trans community more aware and accepting, and may feel like its important to get a head count. Personally, i feel like its mostly a non issue. If someone wants to be seen and accepted as a certain gender, be it inborn or trans, at what point does their decision have ramifications beyond their personal life? The answer isn't zero, but it's still mostly just their issue and no one elses.
I would find it offensive. The basic male/female question is even becoming a bit boring for me, marketing and consequently government rules our lives in a way that is IMHO unhealthy.
Good point
