Most people probably still succumb to the flag-waving patriotic BS and we have a long history of sending people off to die in wars and then neglecting or even rejecting them when they return home. The way vets were treated after Vietnam, as complicit in war crimes despite that most of them were drafted and had no choice, was particularly schizophrenic.
