I am so glad I found this community! Thank you all for your helpful and insightful replies to my first post about being in the closet.
So today I went to the fundamentalist bible study that a good friend teaches. I am super undercover there and marvel at the crazy Old Testament stuff they wholeheartedly believe.
I have found a way to endure it by approaching it for what it really is: an invention to control people and glorify who is in charge through supernatural claims and pure fear.
They can’t help but throw in a few jabs at Obama as the antichrist and how great Trump is making America again.
What is scary is how many people believe this way. I thought Neanderthought was a thing of the past.
Such people are driven by "fear of the other": their personal insecurities are compounded by their lack of cognitive flexibility.
Yes, many of us are X-Christians. It was often studying the Bible, instead of just listening to church sermons, that contributed to our process of becoming atheists. I find that most of us are much more familiar with what is actually in the Bible than self proclaimed evangelicals. Youtube is a great resource. There are many debates with people like Matt Dillahunty, Sam Harris, and Dan Barker that are very informative. Also Matt has a Youtube show (The Atheist Experience) every week right out of Austin TX.
I understand your situation. I live in Indiana, home of Mike Pence and one of the most Christian anti-LGBT areas in the country. But I am retired now and don't give a crap what they think. LOL
I am glad you are here. It was a sight sililar to this that helped me when I first came out. I used a symbol instead of a picture and went by Compelledunbeliever for fear of revealing my identity. It took a few years but now I have an atheist youtube channel where I show my face and have obviously revealed my name. It was less difficult than I imagined.
