my father was portuguese and my mother was not. my father had quit the church so there was no pressure to .become cathlic. i grew up in a portuguese community so there was a large cathlic community and a very small other. we belonged to the other so we went to the other church. one sunday morning mom says do you boys want to go to church and in unison we answered no. for me it was the biblical stories that i could not believe specificly the parting of the red sea. when i was older and knew more stuff i learned it was possible if the wind was right. so did i do the right thing for the wrong reason or does it matter?

The process is different for everyone, some for science reasons, some for moral reasons, some for philosophical reasons.
But as you are expressing the most difficult part is to deal with the emotional and identity side of religion that is built since childhood.
You are out, this is good, if you need to justify why you are out there are plenty of books about philosophy, science. You don't need to hate religion, just learn why all of them cannot be the truth (or any of them at all)

You didn't know too much at the young age when you realized that story was bs, because yes there are some way that might happen, but never by command, but there are innumerable bs stories in the bible starting from book 1, Genesis from the old testament, to Revelation, the last book of the new testament. So doesn't matter, sooner ir later you would have called bullshit. Obrigado.

Greetings from a Portuguese citizen. Well, no point going to the church just to please others. If many Catholics don't go, why should you? I have a Catholic friend who goes to church but doesn't believe everything that he reads in the Bible. You just exercised your freedom of choice.
