I have one friend who is defiantly atheist, he also happens to be a scientist, a good person who has done a good job of shedding the prejudices instilled by his family. That said I have another very good friend that is Religios... My best friend since the age of 5 & still Catholic, has a Masters degree in history and if a building is on fire he’s the one you want in charge, great friend, great guy. I find it a quandary. The 3 of us will always be great friends destitute our paths diverging. Who else has managed to stay best of friends with someone who’s beliefs are 180° from your own?
I have many friends who are religious, and as long as they don’t follow me on Facebook (I tend to post a whole lot of Athiest, humanist, secular memes) we get along fine. If they want to start a conversation on belief and faith, I wouldn’t shy away. Most choose not to and we focus on those things that made us friends in the first place.
I have a friend that is Jewish by culture and birth. He was of faith too, but converted to Christianity. I enjoy many aspects of our friendship. I also enjoy debating BOTH politics and religion with him. I guess we are both trying to "SAVE" one another!! LOL!!!
I don't have a single friend who has Faith. That's not a conscious decision on my part, just how it pans out. Also, Australia has a significantly lower level of faith and church going than, say, the US.
For example, I was recently at a local pub, working on my laptop. I needed ("needed" ) to go inside to get another pint, but didn't want to pack up my rig. A bunch of 20 somethings were at the next table over. I approached them and solemnly told them that Christ had died for their sins. They didn't know how to react. Then I told them I was just kidding, can you please watch my rig. They fell about with laughter. To be religious is kooky in mainstream Australia.
I have. I’ve known my best friend since we were in elementary school but we didn’t get close until high school. I’m 44 now so about 25 years. I wouldn’t say she’s a bible beater, she’s Lutheran. But she’s served on the board of her church for many years and it’s an important part of her life. We don’t discuss religion or politics as a whole. I will mention things like getting together for an atheist meet-up and she’ll talk about issues at church. We listen to each other but don’t actually discuss religion itself. Not sure if that makes sense or not.
