The idea behind lifetime appointments for supreme court justices is that, by giving them their positions for as long as they want them, they are liberated from politics. They aren't beholden to anyone. Not political parties, not donors, not endorsers, or event the voters. That way they can judge as unbiased as possible with no fear of what will happen if they pass a particularly unpopular judgement and no worry about who's ass they need to kiss to get reappointed. That's the idea anyway.

@RoboGraham But they also get old and out of touch with the country. When the we boomers are gone the Millenials will be the largest voting block ( They are pretty close to equal right now, I believe ), and they appear to be pretty liberal. They will be dealing with an old conservative court which will be, and I think is at present, out of step with the country. That does not bode well for the country as I look down the road.
