I find myself using the expression, “Thank God!” in a pretty regular manner. I have tried to say “Thank Void” as an alternative but it is not yet habitual. I would really like to stop using this expression as well as others such as, “oh my god”, “for the love of god”, “god forbid”. This language is so ingrained in my vocabulary that I have to consciously make an effort not to use it. Does anyone else struggle with using these expressions, or have alternative expressions that they use?

As has been said, how about "Thank Goodness?" =]

This is a good alternative for sure, I guess now it’s about making it a habit! ?

I have made every effort to switch to “thank goodness!”, or “oh my gosh!” By the same token, though I may “fuck that!” or “fuck you!” Does not mean I want to have sex with that or you. It’s all semantics and habitual, usually learned from friends and families. And then quite often if I do something stupid or painful I just invent words and say them loudly! 🙂

My mental style guide-

The tl/dr for me seems to boil down to something more direct and concise, which is probably not everyone's cup of tea. And possibly somewhat more curse-ridden.

Thank God:
I'm glad.
Oh, good.
Oh, my heart. Thank you.

Oh, my god:
Wow. Impressive. Shiiit.

For the love of God:
Fucking really, Dude?
Please. Genuinely, please.

God forbid:
Like you would ever...
I'm certain [X] would totally....

I use a lot of "god" language too but i am sure that it can't be misconstrued as a religious cry for deliverance to a higher power. Can't really see my independent, fundamental, quiver full, so-baptist-people-think-she's-catholic, uterus like a clown car sister dropping f bombs as an opening adjective to Jeses' name or popping off in exasperation with "jumping jesus on a pogo stick". The tamest i get is when i mutter "jesus, mary & joseph....W.T everlovin F?" Pretty sure anyone who overhears it knows I don't darken church doors. & I really can't see me hollering "OH YES VOID DON'T STOP" in the middle of hot, sweaty, circus sex when my first language involves the invocation of "god" in a variety of ways to communicate a wide range of emotional responses.

I like to say, "Thank Jebus"

Words only have the power and meaning that we give them. Those phrases for me mean no more then WTF.

I've never been religious, I say it as an expression. It's a bad habit but most of the time I use the word 'god' in a blasphemous way. So there's that. 🙂

it's a phase. It passes.

Oh my glob. LMAO ? I say omg a lot. In my world, I am God. I don’t sweat it. I really think it’s ingrained in us so much. It’s a hard habit to break.

3

I usually say something like thank the weather gods or traffic gods or whatever I am relieved about. I do say heaven forbid though.

Jesus Fucking Christ is pretty standard in my daily vocabulary.

I don't worry about the fiction it's derived from, just like I assume women screaming Oh God aren't praying or invoking figments into the party.

3

Most expressions are figurative, they don't mean literally. Heck if you feel better after you say it, great!

I commonly use "God" for all types of expression. In writing, I'll often capitalize His name, so there is no confusion that I'm talking about the real invisible man in the sky.

3

Have fun with it.
Thank Zeus, Thank Apollo. Thank Thor for that. Thank Horus.
Thank the Gods for their blessings
It freaks people out.

3

I say thank f**k or Jesus Christ mainly the others is never really used

I say both of those as well but they aren’t necessarily good for all types of scenarios. ?

3

people say " how are you" as a greeting. How many do you think really mean it?

Touché!

@Bop2122 so don't worry about it

@Bop2122 a Chinese professor of mine told me it was customary for them to ask "Have you eaten" as a greeting. He said they could care less if you ate or not

3

I say "Thank physics!", but it's not yet habitual, either.

3

thank goodness

I think the use of the lord's name in vain is appropriate for us atheists. 😀

Maybe substitute "goodness" for "god".

Haha, never thought of it that way! My goodness that’s a great idea! ?

These are just expressions, they don't really mean anything to me.
However, when I usually say something like that, I say something like, "thank the goddess!".

I do that too - "thank goddess" ... lol

2

Omg, I've been getting heat for that lately, either people say "look or see, you're coming around" or "please don't say that cuz you're taking the lords name in vain, since you are an atheist". I like using the word void instead, I say oh my god, all day at work, so I can't wait to say it and see if anyone notices or pretends it's offensive to them! Good post!

God, Supreme being, big Bang are all things unknown, that does not mean they don't exist

2

wouldnt worry about it, not like someone is going to punish you for it 😉

Its a little thing but I have noticed people raised religious tend to say god in curses more.

2

Thank Jeebus is a good alternative.

2

I say 'thank Glob' (from Adventure Time ?), and 'oh, your god'. I mostly avoid other god-terms, just saying 'damn it' instead of 'god damn it', for instance.

Why the lump haven’t I thought of this!? Lumpy Space Princess is my spirit animal! Totally doing this! ?

@Bop2122 after binge-watching several seasons, I started saying it without even thinking about it!

Well I guess I know what show I’m binging next! ?

Thank the universe or I say thank you dead star
