Yesterday I was at the worst funeral ever. So, mom mother's recently deceased husband ( who she married late in life) died. He was a retired minister, yet knowing that I was a non-thiest, he always respected me enough to not bring up religion without me ever mentioning it, and he was a nice guy. Anyway, there was a nice typical viewing, and 2 eulogies, about 2 hours at this point. It wasn't a bad memorial/celebration of his life.... Then the minister got up and talked about "saving souls, and "spreading the word," for 45 minutes. It went from a memorial to Carl to preaching; the preacher had to make it all about him and his beliefs, rather than Carl's life and family, grrrrrrr

funerals are for the living ... not the dead. the dead don't care.

Exactly what my husband told me when I asked him what he would like.

@Lorajay wise answer on his part. if someone were to insist on doing something to honor ME it would be smoking weed, eating raspberry zingers, and listening to some mississippi delta blues.

@JeffMesser We had a big party at my house. A neighbor fired up his industrial sized smoker, another neighbor bought hundreds of dollars worth of meat, and many brought side dishes. My kids did playlists, memory books and videos. 230 people signed the book and some had to park 1/2 mile away which meant some of our older friends gave up on coming. We did what he wanted, no words or prayers just lots of good memories and hugs.
