Why I support Mike Bloomberg.

I was once stranded in JFK Airport. Back in the dark age of 1979 I was stationed in Germany and went back to California for a visit. On the way back to Germany I got stuck in JFK for two days. I ran out of money after the first one and couldn't even buy a locker for my luggage. Folks, you've not lived until you've been penniless in JFK, dragging around your luggage, for an entire day.
Then I remembered that a dear friend, who was born in NY, was coming in from California. He had mentioned it because of my leaving a day before his arrival. So I found his flight and met him at the gate. His family, who didn't know I existed, took me to their home, across from Fireside Island for the night. They washed my clothes, fed me, and took me back to JFK for my flight. I owe them a debt which I can never repay and they never asked me to. I went from watching the nightly action in Time's Square, from my hotel window, to witnessing an incredibly generous act of kindness. Because of love for their cousin they trusted me. Trust and family are what New Yorkers prize most. That's why Donald Trump is a problem for Mayor Bloomberg. Our President can't be trusted and his low character brings down OUR family of Americans.
Michael Bloomberg's father taught him that we’re all in this together – and if you have an opportunity to help, you have an obligation to act. That sense of duty has guided Mike throughout his life and career as an entrepreneur, philanthropist, and job creator.
Billy Joel sang, "Some people find that it's easier to hate than to wait anymore." Mayor Bloomberg has never waited to be of help. When Mayor Bloomberg took over from Rudy Giulliani he became America’s most fearless and effective voice on urgent issues like climate change, gun violence, public health, and education. Michael Bloomberg has given $10 billion to support vital causes in the United States and around the world. He's pledged to give away nearly all of his money within his lifetime. Being of service is what now compels Michael Bloomberg to run for president of the United States.
New Yorkers are people who care about workers, families, and getting help for the poor or stupid (like me). Mayor Bloomberg left Zuccati Park open for use by Occupy Wall Street protesters, who had called their first site Bloombergville. He declared, at a press conference held the same day the protests began, "people have a right to protest, and if they want to protest, we'll be happy to make sure they have locations to do it."
As you all know, New York is the capital of USA commerce. Mike Bloomberg built one of the world’s most successful companies from scratch and guided America’s largest city to new heights. Even through the shocks of the global economic crisis. He can unite the Democratic Party, bridge partisan differences, and get Washington back to getting the big things done for Americans.
Mike's father died while he was in college so his mother worked as a secretary. After working his own way through college and Harvard Business School, Mike took an entry-level job with a financial services firm. He worked his way up to partner and eventually oversaw its technology and information systems.
Then, in 1981, Mike was laid off. Rather than spend time raging in anger he decided to start his own company. The very next day Mike launched a groundbreaking idea far ahead of its time: a desktop computer that connected investors to a vast network of information and data. Mike new if his business could distribute that information widely it would democratize financial information. It would empower investors and smaller firms, resulting in dramatically improved returns for pensioners and retirees.
In 2001, after his first run for public office and only three weeks after the terrorist attacks, Mike Bloomberg became Mayor of New York City.
He immediately set to work tranforming New York into a new era of progress and prosperity. His transformative leadership, not Rudy's, made New York one of the great comeback stories in American history.
Mike turned around the broken school system. He drove down crime to record lows, took on the scourge of illegal guns, reduced incarceration and created 400,000 new jobs. His new anti-poverty programs became national models. Mike invested in mass transit and other critical infrastructure. He created new parks, invested in arts and cultural organizations. He pioneered public health initiatives like an ambitious ban on smoking in all indoor workplaces. His policies raised air quality to the highest levels in fifty years and increased average life expectancy for New Yorkers by three years. Nationally our average life spans have fallen three years.
Through all that he also led the rebuilding of the World Trade Center site and created the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. Today's Lower Manhattan has more residents, businesses, and visitors than ever before.
When the 2007 global economic crisis hit, Mayor Bloomberg's investments paid off. Through 2013, the end of OUR nation's second worst recession, New York City gained back 327% of the jobs lost while the country as a whole gained back only 87%.
A "Nanny state," indeed. If that Nanny were Mary Poppins. LOL. Bernie and Warren are fine folks with plans that will raise taxes and some, who don't go to school or need consistent medical care, will be paying more. Mike's plans will cost us less because he's investing in them. The money he can put into winning back OUR WH is free of Fossil Fuel, Pharma, Ag, Foreign Influence, or any other taint. It's money Mike earned legally and honestly. Building respected business's that help and inform people. I'm okay with that money. Further, as a New Yorker he knows how to fight Agent Bone Spurs effectively and is already doing so.
That's why I support NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg. To quote Billy again, "It's always been a matter of trust." Well, I trust Mike to make America a place I'm proud of, again, and very happy to put this New Yorker into OUR White House.

After reading your piece I know much more about MB than I did and I’m glad he’s in the race. I fear Trump will be able to bully the other Dems.

Thanks for sharing your story. The cousin part confused me. Are you his friend still> Or a cousin?

A cousin of my friend.

I don't actually think you are nuts. That was a very well said plea for Bloomberg consideration. I voted that way only because my mind is made up and there wasn't an option for that.

I just don't see another NY billionaire in the White House as a good thing.

Do you think what Trump has is contagious and it afflicts other NY billionaires?

@yvilletom

No but when I see billionaire elites buying their way into the highest office in the land, I see a plutocratic assault on democracy.

@RoboGraham The colonists didn’t bring democracy from England. After they freed themselves from King George III, the Founders gave us oligarchy, rule by a few, not democracy.

In America democracy exists only in the 18 states whose voters have the direct initiative, referendum and recall. In those states democracy exists only when the voters are deciding who or what they will vote for or against.

@yvilletom

Right, democracy exists in all 50 states where people vote for who they wish to represent them in government.
