Free public transport is affordable in a small, affluent area. I doubt Australia could manage it. But it would be an idea to semi-nationalise and then subsidise it.
True but instituting such a scheme in congested inner city areas for the public is feasible , as is paying for it with a congestion charge on those who insist on using their cars and none electric commercial vehicles
Bus companies only make their owners millionaires by virtue of the huge government subsidies.
Currently the Victorian State government is paying about $13 or 14 billion to construct a less than 20 klm line across Melbourne.
A few years ago it was announced that a high speed Melbourne - Canberra- Sydney - Brisbane (about 2300 klms) rail link could be built for a mere $22billion. Such a link would result in new cities to relieve current city overpopulation.
