Sorry, guys, but I have to vent.
4 months ago I left my home country, Brazil, to move to Portugal. I did everything right: found a good job, waited for the contract, got the right visa. Part of the job was working in France for a while, which I am doing. Being close to getting back to Portugal and going through the residence permit interview, I started looking for a place to rent.
I knew it was going to be tough finding an apartment while not being able to visit it myself, counting on photos or coworkers to do it, but I was willing to take a certain amount of risk. But I was not ready what came my way: most landlords won't even consider my offers, even if I give all guarantees, pay an year in advance and so on, because I am a foreigner. And I need a rent in order to get the damn permit.
Now the worse of all bigotry: a realtor replied to my offer claiming that my employment documents were forged and that he had informed police and my employer about my attempt to present them. I made myself available for any question or clarification, making clear that I could present documental evidence of any claim! Now I, a legal, hardworking man have to worry about being detained upon arrival at the airport because some stupid prejudiced jerk does not want migrants in his land! I am not a construction worker, I am a Darwin damned engineer whose work is paid by the European Space Agency and other countries -- I bring money into the the country!
I don't have family or friends here in France, nobody else to vent out all this. No need to reply, or pray, or send good thoughts. I am just so frustrated and will hardly be able to sleep now.
I suspect your chances of being detained upon arrival are very, very low - the police will know immediately that your documents are genuine, and since you've already been granted admittance into the EU even if they do have to speak to you it'll be a very apologetic formality. Meanwhile, I hope you can find some accommodation and don't have to deal with any more idiots!
Persistence always overcomes resistance perseverance is the key to success
I sympathise. Spain is far more welcoming to South Americans, even those who speak Portuguese. Are you restricted to a particular location in Portugal?
Prices and commuting are the limiting factors. The company main office is actually in Madrid, but I am not making any plans for now.
