Just had a thought for a dystopian SF plot. Imagine a disease that has a high mortality rate among adults--say 20%--but is only spread by children, who are only marginally affected by the disease. This is only two mutations away from what we have now.
The Stand by Stephen King takes place in a post-apocalyptic world triggered by the breakdown of society following the release of a biological weapon. The weapon is a virulent strain of influenza that decimates the population.
