There seems to be a lot of smarty pants on this site, so I thought I would share this video. As Atheists and Agnostics, what is your interpretation of "Divine Inspiration"?

There is nothing divine about inspiration. Inspiration can be triggered by many things. The image of a boy deliberately jumping into a puddle with clumsy boots might inspire a painting illuminating freedom or joy of the moment -- not necessarily a boy and a puddle. I might pass by an old, deteriorating barn on a country road and be inspired by the sight to right a story of a man seeking to take his complex life in the city and simplify it, or the struggle of a young country girl wanting to leave the farm and make a splash in Hollywood -- not necessarily a story about a barn falling apart from neglect. For the woo followers, they can always come up with some way to work in the divine, but the sort of machinations required to do it are stretching the envelope of credulity to the limit, and the slightest scrutiny will collapse their nebulous constructs.

Writers like to inject the word 'muse' in place of 'divine' for their inspiration, but both are so much woo. The creative mind is constantly toying with ideas, images, moods, and worlds. The sudden inspiration is really that creative mind propelled in some direction after having connected a random series of unrelated ideas that then morphed into something else, something that has excited the artist enough to want to pursue it. Interestingly, ideas are not the creative person's problem. For most artists in any discipline, ideas are too plentiful. The problem is in the execution of those ideas. Converting them from mental to material works of art requires something most creatives have in short supply. Discipline to not be distracted by the ideas that continue to bombard him/her and the patience to see it through. That is where many would-be artists fall, and it is something that is definitely not divine.

I know, the Guy in the Clouds blessed the artist with the ability to accomplish his/her work. The usual.

Chrfistians would call them not Gods and they break a commandment. Thou shall have no other Gods before me. I am the one and only. Our constitution guaranatees the right of religious freedom to all. It is in the 1st or 2nd amendment. Everyone has a right to their own belief system. 45 has his own belief system. 45's belief is: I am the smartest, greatest man on the planet. That one I do not like. Bible says no false Gods!

Does the attribution of the word "divine" add some quality to the source of inspiration, a sort of elevation to the mystical realm? I viewed the video and it was interesting to listen to the commentary. However, I find the paintings of Jan van Eyck to be more interesting but I would never describe them as "divinely" inspired.

@Sarahroo29 @sassygirl3869 My first thought is B.S. and that whatever revelation which comes through this means is that person's alone, and no one else is beholden to it. BTW, the video can be viewed if you paste the title into a search on youtube.

I never said anything offensive to be called out for BS.

@Sarahroo29 No no. I was just explaining how to view the video.

@Rossy92 The way you worded the comment made me think you're a troll. Sorry.

I haven't clicked on the link (sorry paranoid) but surely without a belief in the divine, then "Divine Inspiration" is just "Inpiration." Personally I have no problem with using the word "divine" as a superlative without supernatural connotations just as I'd dicuss a the muses in a similarly metaphorical matter. If someone is sersiously arguing that seemingly new ideas cannot come from the subconcious only from an alien intellect then I have a very low opinion of the alien intellect that came up with that one.

It comes out of 'no where,' and gives you an answer to something that you are struggling with. Then sometimes, you may get an inspiration for something clear out of the blue, that wasn't on your radar!

Been to the Prado. Video not working.

Lots of us have been to The Prado. Some of us don't need to mention it.

It was 44 years ago when I was in college. I was going to say I don't remember much about it except one painting that was really weird.

Def: Divine Inspiration; the explanation humans use for creative impetus when they don't know what else to say, or don't want to reveal the true source of creative output; or just plain bullshit designed to convince others to agree with them based upon mutual superstitious belief.

I got so lost in the art appreciation that I forgot to be divinely inspired. We can all be inspired by whatever respectively inspires up. The idea of inspiration caused by divinity is just another human construct. Some are just as inspired by sex, the promise of wealth, or strong emotion; and, after all, haven't we established that strong emotion is what inspires the wish/belief for divinity?
