I’m not sure that Dr. Oz is a Republican. He seems more interested in health issues than in politics. I really don’t know, not being a TV watcher.
He didn’t say that we would lose 3% of children. He said that opening schools might lead to an overall population loss of 3%. Very few children are dying of the Coronavirus.
He has retracted, but actually the proposal to open schools is not all that radical, and there are arguments in its favor. Just about everyone will eventually be exposed to the Coronavirus. All the lockdown does is delay the inevitable and lessen the run on hospitals. Sweden’s schools are open for that very reason. The goal is herd immunity.
On the other hand, the lockdown might give time for a vaccine to be developed.
What med-science is discovering is that a significant number of COVID19 carriers are themselves asymptomatic; yet they can pass the disease.
Anyone recall the lessons of Typhoid Mary? The problem with her is that she had light symptoms; returned to work - and was considered indirectly responsible for a number of deaths.
We could be in for s shocking resurgence of deaths....
@Robecology Yes, I’ve read about that.
There hasn’t been a surge in Coronavirus deaths yet compared to the great epidemics of history. Short of vaccinations, there’s no way to contain a virus like this forever. All you can do is slow the spread. The sooner the population has natural immunity the better.
@OwlInASack I feel that the economy will revive on its own as people resume trading and otherwise interacting with each other. Governments might facilitate that when it is safe to do so by adopting policies that encourage business.
The great majority of those killed so far by this virus were elderly and had other health problems. While their deaths are tragic for them and their families, for society as a whole there is no major loss, and in fact there is probably benefit. I can say that since I am 77 myself. I’ve already had a good life, and will try to accept with dignity whatever happens, moving on to make room for younger folks if that is my fate.
We’ll see.
